Developing railway logistics

In the context of a rapidly growing economy and increasing demand for freight and passenger transportation, developing railway transport is considered one of the important tasks in restructuring the national transportation system towards a modern, green, and sustainable direction.

Compared to other modes of transport, rail logistics services are considered to have significant growth potential, especially as Vietnam is promoting investment in inter-regional transportation infrastructure and deeper integration into global supply chains.

Great potential

One of the great potentials of rail logistics lies in its ability to connect industrial zones, seaports, border crossings, and distribution centers. As railway lines are upgraded and seamlessly connected to seaports, inland container depots (ICDs), and logistics warehouses, rail can become a crucial link in a multimodal transport network.

Compared to road transport, rail transport has the advantage of being able to transport large volumes of goods stably, safely, and with less susceptibility to traffic congestion. This method is suitable for product groups such as: import and export containers, industrial goods, raw materials for production, agricultural products, and goods requiring long-distance transport.

Since 2024, Vietnam Gas Corporation (PV GAS) has been transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the South to the North by rail. According to Mr. Nguyen Phuc Tue, Deputy General Director of PV GAS, this is a solution to meet the increasing consumption demand of economic centers in the North. PV GAS implements multimodal transportation combining road and rail, bringing LNG to regions and markets far from existing energy infrastructure.

In the future, as strategic transportation infrastructure projects are implemented, railways will not only play a role in passenger transport but also become a pillar in the national logistics system, thereby contributing to reducing costs for businesses, enhancing the competitiveness of the economy, and promoting the transition to a sustainable transportation model.

Not only domestically, the railway is also expected to become Vietnam's international transportation method. In early June 2026, the first dedicated international freight train from Qinghai Province ( China ) arrived in Vietnam, reaching Trang Bom Station in Dong Nai Province, directly connecting with industrial centers in the South. The railway sector is planning to organize more dedicated train services to connect Vietnam and China.

According to Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), railways have great potential in developing logistics and transporting goods domestically and internationally. However, the current limitation is that the domestic railway network, particularly the North-South line, is still mainly based on a system established decades ago. Operating speed is limited, infrastructure is deteriorating, and many sections of the line do not meet the requirements of modern transport. This necessitates a more efficient transportation method. Especially for major production centers, industrial zones, seaports, and border crossings, railways are expected to become a crucial link in the supply chain.

Enhance investment and ensure synchronized connectivity.

Vietnam has invested and will continue to invest heavily in domestic railway lines as well as connections with neighboring countries. Vietnam's first high-speed railway line, connecting Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh, commenced construction in April 2026. The project is considered a strategic infrastructure project of significant importance, creating a breakthrough in modern transportation infrastructure, promoting regional connectivity, especially for the Northern key economic region and the Red River Delta.

In addition, the North-South high-speed railway, Vietnam's largest infrastructure project, is also planned for construction. The development of this high-speed railway will help reduce pressure on road transport, alleviate traffic congestion, promote the development of multimodal transport services, and enhance the flexibility of the logistics system.

For localities with strong industrial potential like Dong Nai, the need for rail freight transport is even more evident. With a large industrial park system, high import and export volumes, and its strategic location connecting to the Southern key economic region, Dong Nai has a great need for transporting raw materials, components, and containerized goods to seaports and logistics centers. Developing freight stations and logistics centers connected to the railway will open up more efficient transportation options for businesses.

Dong Nai province has planned a central transshipment warehouse for the eastern region in Trang Bom, which is linked to the development of the railway industry. Ho Nai Station and Trang Bom Station have long been important areas for the collection and transportation of goods on the existing railway line.

According to Mr. Dang Quy Nhan, General Director of Nam Mekong Agricultural Products Joint Stock Company (Ho Chi Minh City), the company purchases many agricultural products from the Central Highlands, Dong Nai, and other localities for consumption and export. For a long time, goods exported to China have had to be gathered in Ho Chi Minh City. The issue businesses desire is a synchronized connection, a designated area in Dong Nai to link with railway transportation, avoiding additional costs. The recent direct rail freight train connection from China to Dong Nai was an event of great interest to businesses, and they hope it will become a more regular activity.
