Beach volleyball, originating from Brazil, has recently gained popularity in Vietnam. It's a two-team sport, with each team consisting of 2 or 4 players competing on an 18x9 meter sand court. The court is divided into two equal halves by a net suspended from two vertical posts. Each half of the court measures 9x9 meters. The ball can be passed using feet or other body parts, excluding hands, arms, and forearms. The objective is to hit the ball over the net so that it lands on the opponent's side of the court, preventing the opponent from doing the same on their own side. A player is not allowed to touch the ball twice in a row. A rally ends when the ball touches the ground or when a player commits a foul.
Recently, the foot volleyball movement has been embraced by many athletes in the city. Among them, outstanding athletes have been selected for the city team. To improve their skills, the athletes maintain regular training sessions on the beaches. Having just finished a training session with his teammates at Man Thai beach (Man Thai ward, Son Tra district), Tran Van Hung, an athlete on the city's foot volleyball team, said: “This is a new and interesting sport that requires players to have good foot skills and smooth coordination with teammates. Depending on training needs, each team consists of 2 or 4 people. However, in the city's foot volleyball team, we usually train with 2 people per team. Along with football and beach volleyball, this sport has the potential to develop strongly in the future as the foot volleyball movement spreads to other localities.”
In Ngu Hanh Son and Son Tra districts, beach sports are thriving. Beach football and beach volleyball, in particular, have contributed to the success of these two districts in city-level championships. According to Mr. Huynh Ba Duong, Deputy Director of the Culture, Information and Sports Center of Ngu Hanh Son district, to diversify beach sports, the district will develop beach volleyball. Athletes in the district's beach football and beach volleyball teams possess good skills and are capable of training and competing in beach volleyball. Currently, the athletes maintain training and are ready to participate in tournaments organized by the city. Meanwhile, according to Mr. Vu The He, Director of the Culture, Information and Sports Center of Son Tra district, before city-organized tournaments, the district organizes competitions for the wards to select outstanding athletes for the district team. Along with beach football and beach volleyball, the district will organize a beach volleyball tournament to promote the sport.
To promote the development of beach volleyball, the Department of Culture and Sports, in coordination with the S&A Football Center, recently organized the Da Nang City Open Beach Volleyball Tournament at Bien Dong Park. Held for the first time in Da Nang, the tournament was lively and exciting, with the participation of 30 athletes from 8 teams: Ba Ria - Vung Tau, An Giang, Long An, Quang Tri, Ho Chi Minh City 1, Ho Chi Minh City 2, Da Nang 1, and Da Nang 2. The teams were divided into two groups, playing a round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. At the end of the tournament, the organizers awarded prizes to the top four teams.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports Nguyen Trong Thao, compared to other localities, Da Nang has many favorable conditions for developing beach volleyball. This sport does not require large investments. In their first participation in a tournament hosted by Da Nang, the city's beach volleyball team had the opportunity to interact and compete with athletes from strong beach volleyball teams in other localities. In the future, the city will continue to organize beach sports championships, including beach volleyball tournaments, to create opportunities for athletes from districts and counties to compete. At the same time, it will host a national-scale beach volleyball tournament to diversify the types and content of beach sports competitions.
