Previously, the child experienced swelling and pain in the upper left jaw area. The family dismissed it as a common tooth decay problem and did not take the child to the doctor. However, the swelling worsened, the face became noticeably deformed, the child experienced significant pain, and had difficulty opening their mouth, so the family took them to Thai Nguyen Central Hospital for examination.
Through clinical examination and imaging, doctors discovered a odontogenic tumor measuring approximately 6x7cm in the upper left jawbone. The tumor had grown large, invading almost the entire upper jawbone, extending to the orbital floor, compressing the eyeball, and causing deformity of the left half of the face.
According to Dr. Nguyen Van Giap, Deputy Head of the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery, this is a rare case of odontoma in children, with a high degree of complexity due to the tumor displacing important blood vessels and nerves in the facial area, posing a significant risk of bleeding during surgery. The patient underwent a multidisciplinary consultation involving specialists in Dentistry, Maxillofacial Surgery, Ophthalmology, Cardiovascular Emergency Medicine, and Anesthesia and Resuscitation to develop a safe treatment plan.
After more than two hours of surgery, the team successfully removed the entire tumor while preserving as many vital anatomical structures as possible. The entire vascular and nerve system of the facial area was safely controlled, with no complications occurring during or after the surgery.
The child's health is currently stable and recovering well. Vision in the left eye has reached 10/10, sensation in the left cheek is gradually recovering, and the face has improved significantly after surgery.
