As a country situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in the Philippines. Below are some of the recent deadly earthquakes in the Philippines:
On June 8, 2026, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, killing at least 37 people. A tsunami hit several coastlines.
On October 10, 2025, two powerful offshore earthquakes, occurring within hours of each other, shook Davao province in eastern the Philippines. The first earthquake measured 7.4 magnitude, killing at least seven people. The second, measuring 6.8, triggered a local tsunami warning.
On September 30, 2025, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook Bogo City in Cebu province. The earthquake caught the entire region by surprise because the Bogo Bay fault line had been dormant for over 400 years, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. This rare, shallow earthquake occurred while people were asleep, killing at least 72 people, injuring hundreds, and causing widespread devastation.

On December 2, 2023, a powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, causing many residents to panic and flee their homes around midnight. At least three people were killed as a result of the earthquake.
On November 17, 2023, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Mindanao killed nine people, according to the Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Collapsed ceilings in shopping malls, landslides, and structural damage were reported across the affected areas.
On July 27, 2022, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Luzon Island in northern the Philippines, killing 11 people.
- On December 15, 2019, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Davao del Sur, Mindanao, killing 13 people. This was the fourth earthquake with a magnitude above 6 to occur in Mindanao since October 2019.

Recently, on June 7, 2026, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred at 7:37 AM (local time) off the west coast of Maasim, Sarangani province, Mindanao island.
Mindanao is the second largest and second most populous island in the Philippines, home to approximately 26 million people. The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning in some areas of the Philippines and neighboring countries, leading to the evacuation of coastal residents before the warning was lifted later in the day. Nearly 40 people were killed, several were missing, and hundreds were injured as a result of the earthquake.
The Philippines is a country frequently affected by earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire"—an arc of seismic faults around the ocean—where most of the world's earthquakes occur.
