The trailer for "The Taste of Things" - directed by the excellent director of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Tran Anh Hung - has many scenes of the main actors cooking for diners.
Adapted from the novel The Life and Passion of Dodin-Bouffant, Gourmet (1924) by Marcel Rouff. The main character Dodin (Benoit Magimel) is a gourmet who spends all his time thinking about top-quality dishes. Dodin's talent is so renowned that he is considered the "Napoleon of gastronomy ".
Dodin has a chef named Eugénie (Juliette Binoche), who has a great sense of taste and ingredients. Eugénie is as admired as her master, but she refuses to take the limelight and devotes herself to the kitchen. She teaches the maid's 13-year-old niece (Bonnie Chagneau Ravoire) to master the art of cooking.
Dodin confesses his love and asks Eugénie's permission to marry him in order to legitimize their relationship, but Eugénie is hesitant. The trailer features a foreign nobleman inviting Dodin and his friends to a lavish but tactless party. In response, Dodin suggests that Eugénie cook pot au feu (traditional French beef stew).

In an interview with Variety in May, when asked if he expected The Taste of Things to receive much praise from critics, Tran Anh Hung said that every time he makes a film, the director always believes the work will be successful.
In the book, Marcel Rouff mentions the dishes in the original novel. These details moved Tran Anh Hung and inspired the director to make the film. When making the project, Tran Anh Hung wanted to challenge his directing skills on the topic of cuisine.
"My first challenge was to make a film unlike any previous work. I wanted to turn food into a love story and follow the process of forming a bond between two lovers," the director said.
Fourteen-star Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire and Michel Naves, an expert at the French National Institute for Agriculture , Food and Environment (INRAE), served as culinary consultants for the film. The pot au feu in the film used 40 kg of meat. After filming, the crew divided the food among themselves.
Tran Anh Hung, 61, studied at the prestigious École Louis-Lumière film school in France. His film The Scent of Green Papaya was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. To date, this is the only Vietnamese-language film to compete in the final round of the Academy Awards.
In 1995, the director won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival with Cyclo. In order to spread the love of cinema to young filmmakers in Vietnam, the artist taught courses within the framework of the Autumn Meeting program. In 1998, Tran Anh Hung was the President of the Caméra d'Or Award at the 51st Cannes Film Festival.
