Review of the movie The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land
The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land captivated viewers by exploring Islamic spirituality, a rare element in Thai horror cinema. This generated a strong wave of curiosity, as most viewers had never encountered this subject before.

Invest in the storyline rather than the jumpscares.

Cursed Land

The plot of The Cursed Land develops quite slowly, with many mysterious details gradually revealed, stimulating the viewer's curiosity. The film focuses on exploring the historical context and the root causes of the conflict, so the climax only truly begins to appear near the end, which may make some viewers feel the film is rather slow and lacks appeal.

The film creates a tense and unsettling atmosphere through static shots and subtly used background sound. It doesn't focus on sensationalism, but instead guides the audience to explore the story of the house and the mysterious events that occurred. Horror elements are used sparingly, with the director deliberately exploiting typical elements of the spiritual horror genre such as rituals, sacred shrines, and jumpscare scenes, aiming to delve into the latent fears within each person.

The film explores spiritual themes.

Cursed Land

The Cursed Land is one of the few Thai films that explores the theme of Djinn, a supernatural creature in Islamic beliefs. Spiritual elements are subtly interwoven throughout the film, providing a tense and suspenseful experience for fans of the horror genre.

The primary spiritual beings in the Cursed Lands are Djinn – supernatural entities with origins and characteristics far more complex than ghostly figures or "sinful angels." Djinn can possess both good and evil sides, and they often appear through summoning rituals to perform a specific task or mission.

The film incorporates many messages.

The film takes viewers back to the historical period of Nong Chok, a place where a Muslim community once lived. This is a land where two distinct religions coexisted, forming the basis of the story and reflecting the complexities of culture and religion in a multi-ethnic society.

The Cursed Land allows viewers to delve deeper into the beliefs, lifestyles, and perspectives of the Muslim community in Thailand. The film emphasizes that division doesn't stem from religious or cultural differences, but rather from a lack of understanding and a failure to empathize and share with one another.

Summary of the movie The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land is one of the most impressive horror films of the year, having dominated numerous prestigious film festivals, including the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the New York Asian Film Festival, the Bucheon International Fantasy Film Festival, and the Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival. With its profound script and powerful message, the film doesn't focus on overly intense horror elements but instead delivers a dramatic experience, suitable for those who prefer a gentler horror genre, one that isn't too bloody or jump-jerking. After reading this review, don't forget to go to the cinema to experience this amazing film for yourself!

Review of the plot of the movie The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land tells the story of Mit and his daughter May, who, after witnessing the sudden death of his wife, both fall into a state of grief and despair. Feeling lost after the great tragedy, they decide to move to a dilapidated, temporary house on the outskirts of Bangkok, while Mit starts a new job as chief engineer at a nearby factory.

Although they only intended to stay for a short time, they unexpectedly encountered strange and dangerous phenomena on their journey to find peace. Living in a place where Buddhist and Islamic beliefs intersected, Mit gradually became confused and bewildered by the customs and traditions of the people. Deciding to dismantle protective amulets and build a shrine, he inadvertently unleashed a vengeful spirit that had been imprisoned for over two centuries.

With the curse so powerful that even the sorcerers couldn't deal with it, the father and son decided to travel to Narathiwat, a remote province in western Thailand, to seek the help of a shaman to perform an exorcism. However, what no one could have foreseen was that this ritual would uncover a series of dark secrets hidden about the land where they lived.
