Review of the movie The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land
The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land attracted the attention of viewers thanks to its exploitation of the theme of Islamic spirituality, a rare element in Thai horror cinema. This created a strong wave of curiosity, as most of the audience had never been exposed to this topic before.

Invest in the story more than the jumpscare

Cursed Land

The plot of The Cursed Land develops quite slowly, with many mysterious details gradually revealed, stimulating the curiosity of the audience. The film focuses on exploiting the historical context and the root cause of the conflict, so the climax only really begins to appear near the end, which may make some viewers feel that the film's flow is quite slow and unattractive.

The film creates a tense, unsettling atmosphere through static shots and subtle use of background sound. The film does not focus on the sensational element, but instead guides the audience to learn about the story of the house and the mysterious events that have occurred. Horror elements are used sparingly, with the director intentionally exploiting typical elements of the spiritual horror genre such as rituals, sacred shrines and jumpscare scenes, to delve into the potential fear in each person.

The film explores spiritual themes.

Cursed Land

The Cursed Land is one of the few Thai films that explores the theme of Djinn, a supernatural creature in Islamic beliefs. Spiritual elements are subtly integrated throughout the film, bringing a tense and suspenseful experience to audiences who are passionate about this horror genre.

The main spiritual creature in the Cursed Lands is the Djinn – a supernatural entity with a much more complex origin and characteristics than ghostly figures or “angels of evil”. Djinn can have both good and evil sides, and they often appear through summoning rituals to carry out a certain task or mission.

The film has many messages embedded in it.

The film takes viewers back to the historical period of Nong Chok, where the Muslim community once lived. This is a land where two different religions coexist, creating the background for the story, reflecting the complexity of culture and religion in a multi-ethnic society.

The Cursed Land gives audiences a deeper insight into the beliefs, lifestyles and perspectives of the Muslim community in Thailand. The film wants to emphasize that division does not come from differences in religion or culture, but from ignorance and lack of effort in understanding and sharing with each other.

Summary of the movie The Cursed Land

The Cursed Land is one of the most impressive horror films of the year, having "dominated" many prestigious film festivals, such as the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the New York Asian Film Festival, the Bucheon International Fantasy Film Festival and the Ho Chi Minh International Film Festival. With a profound script and strong message, the film does not focus on overly harsh horror elements but instead brings a dramatic experience, suitable for those who love the gentler horror genre, not too bloody or scary. After reading the review, don't forget to go to the theater to experience this great film yourself!

Review of the movie Cursed Land

The Cursed Land tells the story of Mit and his daughter May, who, after witnessing the sudden death of their wife, fall into a state of grief and despair. Feeling disoriented after the great event, they decide to move to an old, temporary house on the outskirts of Bangkok, while Mit starts a new job as chief engineer at a nearby factory.

Although they intended to stay only for a short time, they did not expect to encounter strange and dangerous phenomena in their search for peace. Living in a context where Buddhist and Muslim beliefs overlap, Mit gradually feels confused and puzzled by the customs of the people here. Deciding to remove the protective charms and build a shrine, he inadvertently releases a vengeful spirit that has been imprisoned for more than two centuries.

With the curse too powerful for shamans to handle, the father and son decided to travel to Narathiwat, a remote province in western Thailand, to have a shaman perform an exorcism. However, what no one expected was that this ritual would open up a series of dark secrets hidden in the land where they lived.
