According to authorities, the main causes of fires and explosions in homes stem primarily from the unsafe use of electricity, gas, and other heat sources. Many households still use old electrical wiring, fail to install protective devices such as circuit breakers or fuses; and use multiple high-power appliances simultaneously, easily leading to overloads and short circuits. The habit of charging phones or electric vehicles overnight or placing electrical devices near flammable materials also poses risks. In addition, gas leaks, forgetting to close the valve after use, or placing the stove near flammable materials such as curtains or wooden walls are also common causes of fires and explosions. Furthermore, unsafe burning of incense or candles; placing altars close to walls; and storing gasoline, oil, paint, or mini gas cylinders indoors further increase the risk of fire.

In reality, many fires cause serious property damage and even threaten human lives. For example, on the afternoon of February 5, 2026, a fire occurred on Thai Phien Street, Binh Duc Ward, completely destroying one house and scorching two neighboring houses. To effectively prevent fires, authorities recommend that each family proactively learn and equip themselves with basic knowledge about fire prevention and firefighting; remind family members to comply with safety regulations in their daily lives. Flammable items and goods should be neatly arranged, at least 0.5m away from sources of fire and heat; do not store gasoline, oil, or gas indoors. Cars, motorcycles, generators, and other vehicles using gasoline, oil, or flammable liquids should be kept away from cooking areas, sources of fire, and heat.

Strict management of fire and heat sources is essential during cooking, religious ceremonies, or when using heat-generating appliances. Stoves should be turned off and gas valves shut after use; gas systems should be regularly inspected and maintained, and damaged equipment replaced promptly. For electrical appliances, systems should be designed to match power requirements, adequate protective devices installed, and multiple appliances on the same outlet should be avoided. Before leaving the house or going to bed, people should turn off unnecessary electrical appliances.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, residing in Binh Thanh Dong commune, said: “I saw on the news and television that when a fire occurs, people lose their homes, property, and even lives. Therefore, I regularly check the electrical equipment in my house, and if I find any signs of damage, I will repair or replace it immediately. At the same time, I always remind family members to carefully turn off and lock the gas stove after use.” Mr. Minh, who lives in an apartment building in Long Xuyen ward, recognized the risk of fire that could occur at any time, so he bought a portable fire extinguisher to keep in his house for immediate use in case of emergency.

Ms. Le Thi Kieu Trinh, a grocery vendor at Chau Doc market, said: “I and other business owners at the market always comply with fire prevention and control measures. Before leaving, we switch off all electrical circuits, do not cook or light incense at our stalls. We also regularly remind customers not to smoke in the market to prevent fire incidents, protect property, and safeguard ourselves.”

Fire prevention and firefighting are not only the responsibility of the authorities but also the responsibility of every citizen. Proactive prevention, early detection, and timely handling of incidents will contribute to minimizing damage. From simple actions like turning off electricity, shutting off gas, and arranging belongings properly, each family will contribute to building a safe and civilized living environment.
