TP - Although the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has not yet announced the enrollment plan for the first grades (grades 1, 6, and 10), many parents are already looking for private schools to prepare a backup plan for their children.
Find a seat early.
Mr. Nguyen The Dung, from Dong Da district, Hanoi, said that his child's abilities make it difficult for him to get into a public school. His family is currently researching and considering two options: Archimedes High School (Dong Anh campus) and Marie Curie High School (Long Bien campus). These are two private schools, located far from home, but they offer transportation, some provide lunch, and some offer two sessions per day, which suits the family's needs.

Ms. Trinh Thi Ngan (Ha Dong district) is also looking for a private high school in Ha Dong district. Ms. Ngan determined that her child doesn't have the ability to pass the entrance exam for a public high school, so she's looking for a private school that accepts applications based on academic records. However, in 2024, To Hien Thanh High School (Ha Dong, Hanoi) is conducting an unauthorized enrollment of 10th graders, so Ms. Ngan is worried that a similar situation might occur with other private high schools where she wants her child to apply.
In an interview with reporters, the leaders of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training affirmed that there is no specific information yet regarding the enrollment of 10th grade students in public schools for the 2025-2026 school year. To effectively meet the requirements of the first 10th grade entrance exam under the new curriculum, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training requires schools to seriously implement the school year's program, teach all subjects and educational activities fully, and absolutely avoid complacency or biased teaching. During teaching and review sessions, schools need to closely adhere to the requirements of the curriculum and the sample exam questions for the 10th grade entrance exam published by the Department.
Reporters have observed that the pressure to enroll 10th grade students in Hanoi has been most intense in the districts of Ha Dong, Thanh Xuan, and Cau Giay. These districts have experienced rapid population growth due to the concentration of a large number of apartment complexes and newly built schools that cannot keep up with demand.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Ha Dong District, in the 2024-2025 school year, the entire district will have 144 schools across three levels: preschool, primary, and secondary, including 23 secondary schools and 7 combined-level schools. Thus, if we consider only secondary schools, Ha Dong District has 30 schools, but only 3 public high schools: Quang Trung High School, Le Quy Don High School, and Tran Hung Dao High School, and 1 high-quality high school: Le Loi High School. The total enrollment quota for 10th grade in 2024 for the 3 public high schools in Ha Dong District is 2,025 students out of nearly 7,000 students graduating from secondary school.
On social media, in a parent group with nearly 160,000 members, the most talked-about topic in recent days has been choosing private schools for children who didn't get accepted into public high schools. A parent requesting information on good quality private high schools in Hanoi received hundreds of responses in a short time. Parents are interested in the quality of education, location, tuition fees, and admission methods, with particular interest in high-quality schools that use academic transcripts for admission to increase their chances of acceptance.
Since the beginning of December 2024, many private high schools in Hanoi have announced their enrollment information for the 2025-2026 school year, along with their admission methods. Doan Thi Diem High School announced the release of application forms for 10th grade enrollment starting February 18th. Parents and students can register for admission through two methods: in person or online. Le Quy Don Secondary and High School announced 240 enrollment slots for 10th grade, with admission based on secondary school transcripts. The school released application forms from February 17th. Ly Thai To Secondary and High School is enrolling 480 10th-grade students for the 2025-2026 school year, accepting applications from February 10th to 21st, and announcing the results on February 24th.
Previously, several private schools had announced early enrollment schedules for 10th grade in December 2024. Hoang Mai Star High School announced enrollment for 350 10th grade students, with registration opening on December 2nd until the quota is filled. Newton High School opened registration for 10th grade enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year for both its campuses at Hoang Quoc Viet and Ho Tung Mau. The admission method includes taking an entrance exam at the school and participating in an interview with teachers. Nguyen Sieu Secondary and High School accepts applications for 10th grade enrollment from December 9th, 2024 for students currently in 9th grade at the school and from March 17th, 2025 for students from other schools for the enhanced academic English class. The school also has another registration period in July for students applying with the results of the public 10th grade entrance exam organized by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
Students at junior high schools in Hanoi are eagerly awaiting the announcement from the Department of Education and Training regarding the third exam subject as stipulated, so they can plan their revision and knowledge enhancement.
Wait for the third exam.
In 2024, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training prohibited private schools from holding their own entrance exams, allowing them to only consider academic transcripts or the results of the public high school entrance exam. While many schools adopted the academic transcript-based admission method, over 40 schools also used the results of the Hanoi public high school entrance exam. However, in practice, schools still conducted aptitude tests or combined interview and talent-based selection methods to ensure the quality of incoming students.
Currently, 9th-grade students in many localities are aware of the 10th-grade entrance exam plan for the 2025-2026 school year. Unlike previous years, this is the first 10th-grade entrance exam for students graduating from junior high school under the 2018 General Education Program. Notably, from 2025, according to Circular 30 on junior and senior high school entrance exams issued by the Ministry of Education and Training , the subjects in the 10th-grade entrance exam will not be weighted. Therefore, even without knowing the third exam subject, students in Hanoi will not have their Literature and Mathematics exam scores multiplied by a factor of 2.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Principal of Trung Vuong Secondary School in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi, said that the school has planned to supplement the knowledge of 9th-grade students. Students at risk of falling below the required standard will receive free review sessions, as in previous years. This year, due to new regulations on supplementary tutoring, other students will be taught according to the city's regulations of two sessions per day. However, Ms. Ha affirmed that this teaching only meets the knowledge requirements for the 10th-grade entrance exam; parents who want their children to enter specialized high schools must have separate plans. Ms. Ngo Thi Kieu Linh, Principal of Le Loi Secondary School in Hoan Kiem District, said that for 9th-grade students, the school is "making do with what it has," organizing supplementary knowledge in Literature and Mathematics within the allocated class time as prescribed by the curriculum.
Students at junior high schools in Hanoi are eagerly awaiting the Hanoi Department of Education and Training's announcement of the third exam subject as stipulated, so they can plan their revision and knowledge reinforcement. Schools are still conducting full and serious teaching and learning, and strengthening various forms of testing and evaluation as required by the new curriculum, ready to meet the requirements once the Hanoi Department of Education and Training finalizes the plan.
Schools hope that Hanoi's 10th grade admission plan will remain stable. The responsibility for students neglecting other subjects if they know the exam subjects in advance lies with the school. To graduate from junior high school, students must complete regular, periodic tests and assessments in all subjects as required by the curriculum.
