Restoring ecosystems

On April 2, 2021, the City People's Committee issued Decision 1099/QD-UBND on the project "Building Da Nang - Environmental City" for the period 2021-2030. Over the past 3 years, with the efforts of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Forestry Department, departments, branches, and local authorities, the city has implemented many solutions to conserve nature and restore ecosystems in localities effectively and sustainably.

In the period of 2021-2024, Da Nang city will actively and effectively implement environmental protection work through specific actions such as strengthening pollution control from waste sources, investing in improving environmental quality; waste management, classifying domestic solid waste at source, minimizing plastic waste, preserving biodiversity, responding to climate change, etc.

The city also proactively cooperates, attracts investment resources and technical support to enhance the state management capacity of the industry and localities. Every year, the City People's Committee has issued plans to implement the project, specifically; regarding biodiversity conservation activities, the city has 2 nature reserves, Son Tra Nature Reserve and Ba Na - Nui Chua Nature Reserve, with high biodiversity, with many different ecosystems such as tropical rainforest ecosystems, marine and coastal ecosystems... with thousands of rare species of animals and plants.

According to Deputy Head of the Forest Protection Department Le Manh Hung, the forest area of ​​Son Tra Nature Reserve is 2,520.30 hectares with ecosystems of evergreen broadleaf tropical rainforest on dirt mountains, grassland ecosystems, non-flooded shrubs...

According to incomplete statistics on plants, in the reserve and buffer zone there are a total of 1,451 plant species, belonging to 162 families, 8 classes of 4 phyla. Of which, the angiosperm phylum has 1,370 species, belonging to 137 families and 2 classes; the fern phylum has 68 species, belonging to 21 families and 2 classes; the conifer phylum has 5 species, belonging to 2 families and 2 classes; the gymnosperm phylum has 8 species, belonging to 2 families and 2 classes. Regarding animals, there are 531 species, belonging to 144 families, 48 ​​orders of 5 classes. Of which, the mammal class has 45 species, belonging to 21 families, 8 orders; the bird class has 162 species, belonging to 44 families, 15 orders; the reptile class has 77 species, belonging to 17 families, 3 orders; the insect class has 231 species, belonging to 47 families, 12 orders; the fish class has 16 species, belonging to 14 families and 10 orders. In particular, there are many animal species listed in the Red Book such as the red-shanked douc langur, pangolin... Regarding the diversity of genetic resources of endangered, precious and rare plant species in the conservation area and buffer zone, there are 166 endangered, precious and rare plant species. Of which, 76 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2007; 67 species are listed in the Red List (IUCN)...

Regarding the genetic resources of endangered, precious and rare animals in the conservation area and buffer zone, there are 58 endangered, precious and rare animal species. Of which, 28 species are listed in the Vietnam Red Book 2007; 31 species are listed in the Red List (IUCN)... Like Son Tra Nature Reserve, Ba Na - Nui Chua Nature Reserve currently has thousands of rare and precious animal and plant species listed in the Red Book and in need of conservation. Specifically, there are 202 plant species and 101 endangered, precious and rare animal species...

Fortunately, the city has been proactive and active in nature and biodiversity conservation in recent times. On the other hand, the city has also effectively participated in implementing many policies and strategies on biodiversity conservation such as the Prime Minister 's National Strategy on Biodiversity to 2030, with a vision to 2050; the project to strengthen the prevention and combat of biodiversity crimes to 2030, with a vision to 2050; the National Biodiversity Conservation Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050; the program to conserve endangered, precious and rare wildlife species prioritized for protection to 2030, with a vision to 2050, etc.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has recently coordinated with localities and related units to organize 7 propaganda classes for more than 280 fishermen on the contents of the Law on Fisheries and Islands; at the same time, organized inter-sectoral patrols on coastal fishing and illegal fishing; released 80,000 fish fry of various types on Cam Le River, Dong Xanh - Dong Nghe Lake area, Hoa Khuong Commune, Hoa Vang District to regenerate, restore and protect aquatic resources in the city; propagated coral protection in Son Tra Peninsula...

Regarding wildlife protection and rescue, the department has organized 2 inspections of endangered, precious and rare aquatic species, thereby releasing 9 sharks into the natural environment according to regulations; conducted 114 mobile and extracurricular propaganda sessions at 6 secondary schools and 11 communities near the forest; prosecuted 1 defendant for illegally transporting and trading 1 animal in the list of endangered and rare species; handled 33 administrative violations, fined 710 million VND.

Along with that, inspecting and sweeping against deforestation; buying, selling, and transporting illegal forest products and wild animals in the city, coordinating with inter-sectoral agencies to organize 366 patrols to protect forests, prevent and fight forest fires on Son Tra peninsula; destroying 10 camps, 1,026 animal traps in the forest, driving 11 honey exploiters out of the forest; rescuing and releasing 3 wild animals back into the forest...
