Bruno recommended Mateus to Manchester United. |
Amidst Manchester United's plans to rebuild their squad, finding a replacement for Bruno Fernandes has become a priority. Mateus Fernandes quickly caught the attention of MU after his outstanding performances despite West Ham's slump and struggles at the bottom of the table.
Mateus isn't the top target, but he's considered a potential option in Manchester United's plan to add at least two new midfielders. Besides him, a number of other notable names such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali, and Carlos Baleba are also on their radar.
Mateus made significant progress when he was called up to the Portuguese national team for the first time during the FIFA Days in March, giving him the opportunity to train with his idol Bruno. The young player himself admitted that the Manchester United captain is the biggest role model in his career.
Conversely, Bruno's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain as he is expected to make a decision after the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, Casemiro's departure on a free transfer this summer further intensifies the need to strengthen the midfield.
Financial pressure, including losses exceeding £100 million, could force West Ham to consider selling Mateus after just one season, since signing him for around £40 million.
Besides MU, Man City are also interested in Mateus. With Bernardo Silva potentially leaving Etihad, the race to sign Mateus promises to be intense in the summer of 2026.
