Qualcomm has been releasing processors specifically for PCs (desktop computers) for some time. Since 2018, the company has released chips branded Snapdragon 8xc for Windows laptops, according to Neowin.
Qualcomm says its new Snapdragon X series chips for PCs will launch in 2024.
Today, the company announced that it will discontinue the 8cx-branded chips in PCs in the future, switching to a new product line called the Snapdragon X series.
Qualcomm states that the Snapdragon X platform is built on years of experience designing heterogeneous computing architectures across central processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), and neural processing units (NPUs). Leveraging the next-generation custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU will rely on Snapdragon X, which, when combined with the NPU, will deliver enhanced user experiences on devices in the new era of generative AI (artificial intelligence).
The Qualcomm Oryon CPU was first announced in November 2022. At the time, the company stated that this CPU "will be integrated into a variety of Snapdragon-powered products, starting with PCs and including smartphones... and network infrastructure solutions."
The press release stated that the Snapdragon X branding would help users identify this chip as a product specifically for PCs, in contrast to Qualcomm's chips which are manufactured for smartphones and tablets. The company said it would change the logo on the Snapdragon X line.
