Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip can run Android apps, suggesting that companies are likely to release a smart wearable device at a more affordable price than Apple's Vision Pro.
| The Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset, powered by the M2 chip, is expected to launch early this year. |
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is an upgrade over the older Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, currently used in the Meta Quest 3 priced at $499.99, supporting sharper displays and improved graphics.
“The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution, improving performance and augmented reality entertainment to a new level, such as delivering vivid, crisp images on room-wide screens, life-size overlays, and virtual computers,” shared Hugo Swart, Vice President of Augmented Reality at Qualcomm.
Qualcomm is a major chip supplier for VR and AR headsets on the market. Besides Samsung and Google, the company also stated that many other technology companies have contacted them regarding the next generation of Snapdragon chips. Currently, Qualcomm's chips are used in popular virtual reality devices such as the Meta Quest Pro, HTC Vive XR Elite, Ray-Ban, and Pico 4 Enterprise.
Last year, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google announced a collaboration to develop mixed reality devices. Patrick Chomet, then Vice President of Samsung Electronics, shared that the company was developing a roadmap for mixed reality products, but declined to provide further details.
