Last week, the Quang Nam tourism sector, in coordination with the Vietnam Railways Corporation, conducted a survey at Tra Kieu and Tam Ky stations. This is the first step in the strategy to promote railway tourism, a cooperation agreement signed between the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee and the Vietnam Railways Corporation in April 2024.
For a long time, Tra Kieu and Tam Ky stations have been receiving train passengers passing through Quang Nam province normally, but their function has been purely to serve railway transport, and no businesses have designed tour packages to take visitors from these stations to destinations in the surrounding area.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hong, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, compared to Thua Thien Hue or Da Nang City, railway infrastructure for tourism in Quang Nam is more challenging because the stations are located relatively far from tourist attractions, and the facilities are still limited.
To meet tourism demands, stakeholders need to survey and calculate investment options, especially regarding reception areas at train stations, which must be well-organized and professional.
At the end of March 2024, the "Connecting Central Vietnam Heritage" train service from Thua Thien Hue to Da Nang City was put into operation and received high praise from tourists.
According to the leaders of Vietnam Railways Corporation, the commissioning of the aforementioned train is one of the efforts to connect regions, marking the beginning of transportation business products combined with tourism services... that Vietnam Railways will implement in the future.
This is seen as an impetus for Quang Nam's railway tourism sector to seek opportunities to extend heritage tours by rail. Tra Kieu station (Duy Son commune, Duy Xuyen district) is about 25km from the My Son World Heritage site and only about 20km from Hoi An city; while Tam Ky station is located right next to the center of Tam Ky city.
In the future, if the aforementioned railway line is invested in for tourism, it is necessary to open an additional transportation corridor to enhance self-sufficiency and attract more tourists to Quang Nam.
Initially, local tourism authorities will coordinate the development of policies to encourage and support road transport options such as buses, taxis, bicycle and motorbike rental services, connecting Tra Kieu, Tam Ky, and Nui Thanh train stations to tourist destinations and the city center, making travel more convenient for tourists.
In addition, we will work with tourism businesses to develop specialized full-car and charter train services from Hanoi, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, etc., to Quang Nam, tailored to the needs of tourists traveling to/from Quang Nam by rail.
According to the leaders of Vietnam Railways Corporation, currently, the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City railway line passing through Quang Nam province maintains 6 pairs of passenger trains per day and night, including 5 pairs of regular passenger trains and 1 pair of high-quality SE21/22 passenger trains. The number of passenger trains arriving and departing will be adjusted upwards when tourist demand increases.
The two sides will also cooperate in developing specific mechanisms for tourists with train tickets to Quang Nam, to attract tourists traveling to and from Quang Nam by rail. In addition, they will study and propose the development of a new railway line connecting with Quang Nam province to attract tourists from other provinces and cities to and from Quang Nam.
