The Mother Suốt Memorial House on the Bảo Ninh peninsula. |
In the historic final days of April, we made our way to the Bao Ninh peninsula (Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province). Following the paved road along the river and then up a small slope in Trung Binh village, we arrived at Mother Suot's house. The old ferry landing, where it is estimated Mother Suot made 1,400 trips transporting soldiers across the river each year, has been renovated by the local government, allowing locals and tourists from near and far to come and offer incense on their journey to pay tribute to the "red addresses" along Central Vietnam.
Across the river is the Mother Suốt Monument, commemorating her heroic feat: "With one hand steering the ferry/At the Nhật Lệ riverbank, soldiers crossed day and night" (Tố Hữu's poem). This very stretch of river was the old ferry landing where Mother Suốt tirelessly steered her ferry, transporting soldiers, supplies, and weapons, connecting the two banks during the resistance war against the Americans, leading to complete victory. It is also the place associated with the glorious achievements of the heroic Mother Suốt.

The Nhật Lệ River as seen from the Bảo Ninh peninsula. |
Traveling across the Bao Ninh peninsula, the once impoverished small hamlets have transformed into neighborhoods and urban areas, with high-rise buildings and rows of modern, elegant townhouses. This spectacular transformation is thanks to the shift in the local economy from agriculture, forestry, and fisheries to trade and services.
Locals say that this land used to be nothing but sand, and walking on the trails would burn their feet whenever the hot, dry winds blew. Now, with wide bridges spanning the river, the people of Bao Ninh have truly experienced a transformation. They say it's thanks to the Party that their homeland has achieved what it has today.

The Mother Monument stands as a witness to a painful yet glorious history, reminding future generations of their determination to build and protect the nation sustainably. |
According to Mr. Lai Thanh Hoa, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bao Ninh commune, there are currently 492 fishing vessels in the area, with a catch of over 10,387 tons per year and an average income of 7 million VND per person per month. The living standards of the people have improved significantly, especially since 2019, when the commune no longer has any poor households.
A new wave of opportunities is bringing new possibilities to the Bao Ninh peninsula, especially in the service and tourism sectors. Dozens of investment projects have been launched here with capital amounting to thousands of billions of VND. The beautiful, peaceful coastline has attracted many large investors to this peninsula.
Notably, the Sun Spa and Golden Beach tourist areas, Celina Peninsula, Duy Tan… and 8 urban areas that have become operational, along with a golf course and ecological zone, have created highlights in planning and architecture, attracting thousands of domestic and international tourists each year for tourism and relaxation, bringing significant revenue to Bao Ninh in terms of economic and social development.

A view of the Bao Ninh peninsula today. |
Previously, Bao Ninh was an isolated area with red dirt roads and sandy terrain, where the primary means of transportation for locals to trade with the outside world was motorized ferries. The strengths of this prime coastal land, combined with the vision of the Quang Binh Provincial Party Committee, were translated into action, resulting in the construction of bridges connecting the two banks of the Nhat Le River, contributing to the remarkable economic and social development of the Bao Ninh peninsula.
The Nhat Le River has witnessed and endured countless ups and downs of history. Now, both banks are lined with wide, spacious roads, high-rise buildings, and modern, elegant townhouses. Mother Suot's hometown is now a world-class, large-scale mixed-use urban complex, promising to be a groundbreaking highlight for the future of Quang Binh.

Crossing the Nhat Le 1 bridge and returning to Quach Xuan Ky street, rows of green trees casting shade along the riverbank all the way to the Mother Suot Monument create a peaceful atmosphere that captivates visitors...
In the flow of history, the name Quang Binh province may no longer exist, but the heroic deeds of Mother Suot, with her ferry trips transporting soldiers across the river, and her efforts alongside the people and soldiers of Dong Hoi to shoot down 14 American planes and sink or burn 5 American warships at Nhat Le sea 60 years ago, will surely resonate for generations to come, a reminder of a painful yet proud period of history.
Mother Suốt (real name Nguyễn Thị Suốt, born in 1908) – who, along with the people and soldiers of Đồng Hới, shot down 14 American planes on February 7th and 8th, 1965, and sank or destroyed 5 American warships in the Nhật Lệ sea. In 1967, Mother Suốt was awarded the title of Hero of Labor in the resistance war against the US for national salvation.
