Eritrea is currently one of the few countries in the world that does not offer mobile internet service, with an internet penetration rate of only about 8%.

Eritrea is a country in the Horn of Africa with a population of over 3 million people. Mobile data is not available to the population here, and broadband infrastructure is very limited. To connect to the Internet, people are forced to go to public computer cafes, where access speeds are slow, costs are high, and the range of use is limited.

Eritreans have virtually no access to mobile internet, making connectivity a luxury in everyday life.

Information control policies are strictly applied, with the aim of managing all domestic media activities and limiting outside influence. This means that social media platforms, online messaging services and international information sources are almost inaccessible to the majority of the population.

According to international figures, the rate of internet users in Eritrea is only about 8%, among the lowest in Africa. Compared to other countries with low access levels such as the Central African Republic (7.1%), Comoros (8.5%) or South Sudan (10.9%), Eritrea is unique in that it has almost no mobile internet.

The lack of internet connectivity has a direct impact on many areas of life. Online education is almost non-existent, communication with relatives abroad is difficult, and financial services such as banking transactions, ATM withdrawals, and online payments are limited. In addition, domestic businesses also have difficulty accessing the global market due to the lack of a digital platform.

Eritrea’s telecommunications infrastructure has not received significant investment, coupled with difficult economic conditions, which have hampered the expansion of mobile internet services. Connectivity relies mainly on a few public access points in major cities, while rural areas have virtually no access.

Eritrea is currently among the countries with the lowest level of digital integration in the world . According to international reports, the trend of using mobile internet has helped many African countries narrow the technology gap, but Eritrea remains an exception by maintaining a limited connectivity model.
