When Manchester United agreed to let Rashford join Barcelona on loan last summer, they accepted a buy-out clause of £26 million. At that time, the English striker's form had declined. The decision to sell him cheaply was seen as a way to free up wage bill and refresh the squad.
But things changed quickly. At Camp Nou, Rashford rediscovered his form. He scored 10 goals in 35 appearances and had a strong chance of being called back to the England national team.
Rashford's resurgence has prompted a reassessment within Manchester United. According to recent valuations, the 28-year-old's value is now estimated at around £50 million. Several other clubs are also closely monitoring the situation.
The problem is that Barcelona has the right of first refusal to buy Rashford outright. This puts MU in a difficult position. If the Spanish team activates the clause, the "Red Devils" will have no choice but to let Rashford go for a low price.
Manager Michael Carrick is reportedly willing to work with Rashford again. However, the decision isn't entirely up to him. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to cut the wage bill. Nevertheless, he's not happy with the prospect of letting a player in resurgence leave for a low fee.
Rashford currently has a contract with MU until 2028, earning around £15 million per year. Signals from Spain suggest Rashford is happy with his new life. Barcelona is also reportedly keen to keep him long-term.
What started as a short-term solution has now put MU at risk of losing a valuable asset for an unsuitable price.
