On the morning of the 6th day of the Lunar New Year of the Horse (February 22nd), a vibrant spring fishing festival was held at the Ông Lăng area – located near the beach in Ngọc An fishing village (Tam Xuân commune).
From early morning, elders in their traditional attire come to the Ông Mausoleum to offer incense, flowers, and offerings to the God of the South Sea and the Whale God, performing rituals to pray for a bountiful fishing season, favorable weather, calm seas, and abundant catches of shrimp and fish.
The fishing festival also features traditional folk singing and rowing dances: worshipping the God of the South Sea, praying for a good fishing season, honoring the spirits of fallen soldiers, and symbolically demonstrating the actions of fishermen casting nets and fishing... of the coastal region.
For the people of the coastal village, the fishing festival is an occasion for them to pray to the God of the South Sea and their ancestors for blessings and protection, so that the villagers may have peace and prosperity in their work on the vast ocean.
According to Mr. Huynh Tan Y, Head of Ngoc An village, Tam Xuan commune, the fishing festival brings together local people and those who have left their hometowns to participate. In recent years, the government has continued to encourage coastal villages to preserve and develop the spring fishing festival. This is a spiritual festival, and also an opportunity for people to connect with their roots and strengthen solidarity.
In Sam Rieng village (Sam Linh Tay hamlet, Nui Thanh commune), at the beginning of spring, the people organize a fishing festival, hoping for a successful year at sea. This locality has a large fishing fleet with 17 night seine net fishing groups and 20 boats with a total engine power of 6,200 horsepower.

From early morning, people gathered at the Sam Rieng Mausoleum for the ceremony. Before the offering, elderly people in traditional ao dai (long dress) respectfully boarded a large boat to go out to sea to welcome the God of the South Sea. Amidst the resounding sounds of gongs and drums, the boat stopped at the An Hoa estuary, and the chief officiant performed the rituals of offering and welcoming the God of the South Sea.
Mr. Nguyen Nghiem shared that during the fishing prayer ceremony, the boats go out to sea to offer sacrifices and bring the gods of the South Sea ashore to partake in the offerings at the shrine. The fishing prayer ceremony is also an opportunity for fishermen to remind each other to unite and work together at sea. After the ceremony, Sam Rieng village organizes a boat race, creating a lively atmosphere for the festival.
The spring fishing prayer ceremony is a unique cultural activity that both reflects spirituality and strengthens community bonds and the spirit of solidarity among fishermen who stay at sea and in the fishing grounds.
