These days, the Chau Thuan Bien coastal area in Dong Son commune is bustling from early morning as fishing boats from Quang Ngai province, laden with mackerel, arrive ashore one after another. The atmosphere in the coastal area is lively from dawn, as the fish are quickly sorted and transported for sale as soon as they are brought ashore.
According to local fishermen, fishing boats that catch mackerel near the shore usually depart around 2 PM, travel 15 to 20 nautical miles from the shore in the waters around Ly Son Island, fish throughout the night, and return to shore the next morning. If they hit a school of fish, each trip can yield a catch of 2 to 4 tons of mackerel.
The mackerel fishing season in Quang Ngai usually begins around the first lunar month and lasts until the eighth lunar month. During this time, the yield increases, and the fish are fresh and delicious, so the selling price at the dock ranges from 20,000 to 80,000 VND/kg, depending on size, providing a stable income for boat owners and crew members. This contributes to job creation, increases income for coastal workers, and promotes local fisheries activities during the main fishing season at the beginning of the year.
