The melon gardens in Viet Tien commune are interspersed among the rice fields, standing out with their dark green color and neatly arranged rows. Currently, there are about 50 households growing melons, covering a total area of 12 hectares with varieties such as cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon. This short-season melon variety brings high profits to farmers. This season, the weather is favorable, and people are diligently caring for the melons, resulting in beautiful, large melons with a distinctive sweetness when grown in Viet Tien soil. The melons are grown by farmers for 55-70 days, mainly using manure and bio-fertilizers, so they are trusted by customers inside and outside the district. "This year my family had less time to take care of the melons, so they didn't reach the desired shape. However, thanks to the good soil, the melons are always sweet and fragrant every year. With 3 acres of cantaloupe, my family estimates a profit of over 30 million VND," said Mr. Dau Son from Viet Yen village.
Cantaloupe is currently selling for 20,000-25,000 VND/kg, while honeydew melon and watermelon are priced from 15,000 VND/kg. Mr. Dau Duc Hieu (Viet Yen village) happily shared: "This year we invested a lot of effort in caring for our 3 acres of cantaloupe. Thanks to the good quality and the large, uniform size of each fruit, they are quite popular with customers. Every day I have to go to the field from early morning to harvest 3-4 baskets of cantaloupe to meet the demand." Baskets of delicious, sweet cantaloupes from the fields of Viet Tien commune line up to be brought to the market. Besides cantaloupe, honeydew melon is also a popular choice among consumers. These long, slender melons peek out from behind the leaves, waiting for people to come and harvest them.
The lush green rows of cantaloupes signal to the farmers that they will have a substantial amount of extra income to spend in the coming period. "I invested quite a lot of money in seeds and fertilizers from the beginning of the season to take care of 1 sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of cantaloupe and 1 sao of honeydew melon, so this year the melons have a stable yield and quality. With a selling price at the farm of about 20,000 VND/kg for cantaloupe and 15,000 VND/kg for honeydew melon, I earned about 20 million VND for 2 sao of melons," shared Mr. Lam Van Tang (Viet Yen village). Large bags of fragrant, sweet melons, freshly harvested by farmers, are being delivered to customers.
Local farmers have been growing these melons for over 10 years. Thanks to suitable soil conditions and proper care, the fruit is of good quality and has a distinctive sweet taste that is famous throughout the region. According to surveys, this year's melon yield is lower than in previous years, but the quality remains consistent as always.
It is estimated that farmers growing watermelons earn 10-15 million VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters) after deducting all expenses, which is six times higher than growing rice. Local authorities are encouraging farmers to focus on growing watermelons on a larger scale, contributing to the development of the agricultural economy .
