"Wayne enjoys working on television, but he has a passion for coaching. If the right opportunity arises, he wouldn't hesitate to seize it," a source revealed. Rooney's potential destination is believed to be the Championship or League One, leagues suitable for rebuilding his coaching career.
However, the financial aspect is not simple. Giving up a £400,000-a-year salary means Rooney is taking a risk, because a manager's income in the Championship is not always commensurate with their salary, especially at mid-table clubs.
