Every Lunar New Year, the fresh flower market becomes vibrant with a wide variety of flowers at attractive prices for consumers. Besides popular flowers like apricot blossoms, peach blossoms, and orchids, wild banana blossoms are also a "gift" from the mountains and forests that many people prefer to buy during the Lunar New Year.
Unlike cultivated bananas, whose flowers droop downwards and have a somewhat dull color, wild banana flowers have a strong, sturdy appearance, growing upright in the middle of the old forest. Besides their unusual shape, these flowers are also bright red, interspersed with small, pretty green and yellow bananas, creating a very beautiful sight.
During Tet (Vietnamese Lunar New Year), wild banana blossoms are a popular choice because their red color is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.
From around December to the end of January in the lunar calendar is the peak blooming season for banana blossoms, making them a popular choice for families to display in their homes during Tet (Lunar New Year). In feng shui, the bright red, upright blossoms of the wild banana tree symbolize positive energy, bringing good fortune to the home. The lotus-bud-like shape of the banana blossom is likened to a flame of hope standing out amidst the vast green forest. Mountain dwellers also believe that wild banana blossoms represent fertility, attracting wealth and good luck. Because of this significance, wild banana blossoms are highly sought after, especially at the beginning of the year or during holidays and Tet.
Wild banana blossoms are bright red and last for a whole month before wilting.
Besides decorating homes, many people also buy wild banana blossoms to display in restaurants, cafes, and resort hotels because this unique flower is suitable for spacious areas. The vibrant, wild beauty of the banana blossom adds a striking focal point to any space, while also reflecting the distinctive characteristics of the mountains and forests.
Having bought wild banana blossoms to decorate for Tet (Lunar New Year) two years ago, Ms. Dinh Thi Bich Liem from Pho Vang neighborhood, Thanh Son town, Thanh Son district, said: "I really enjoy arranging flowers. When I go to the highland communes, I see people picking banana blossoms to arrange in their houses, which looks very beautiful, so I asked people to get some for me in exchange for payment. First, to meet my personal needs, and then to share with relatives, friends, and customers near and far."
Wild bananas have a beautiful pink color, making them suitable for display during Tet (Vietnamese New Year).
According to Ms. Liem, there are many types of wild banana flowers, each with its own unique beauty. Among them, the banana flowers from the mountainous forests of Van Chan, Yen Bai province, are large, deep red, and have yellow fruit, making them very popular. Banana flowers from the mountainous forests of Phu Tho province are reddish-orange and usually smaller. Sapa banana flowers are deep red but have green fruit, and the dragon scale banana flowers are small, multi-petaled, and orange, suitable for smaller spaces... Banana flowers can last from 1 to 1.5 months, so they are often purchased for Tet (Lunar New Year) celebrations and as gifts for relatives and friends.

Reportedly, this year Ms. Liem started selling banana blossoms very early. She mainly sells them to flower shops in Hanoi , some agencies and organizations, flower enthusiasts in Thanh Son town, Viet Tri city, and many neighboring areas, at prices ranging from 35,000 to 45,000 VND per blossom, depending on size. Each season, Ms. Liem sells around 1,000 banana blossoms, earning a profit of over 15 million VND.
Wild banana blossoms are suitable for many spaces in the home.
As a regular customer who buys banana blossoms to decorate her home during Tet (Lunar New Year), Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu from Trung Vuong commune, Viet Tri city, said: "I like wild banana blossoms because of their rustic, vibrant beauty, yet they are also unique. Since my husband often works far from home in the highlands, buying banana blossoms is convenient and the price is more reasonable. Banana blossoms are usually arranged in ceramic vases or earthenware jars; about 10 blossoms per vase makes the house look very bright and attractive."
As can be seen, with its unique, vibrant beauty, deeply rooted in the character of the mountains and forests, the wild banana flower is a beautiful flower that many people favor to display during Tet (Lunar New Year) with the hope of welcoming a new year filled with good fortune and success.
