Saas-Fee, a smokeless land in the Alps

Once chosen as the setting for Wham!'s classic Christmas music video "Last Christmas," the small Swiss town of Saas-Fee is not only famous as a ski destination with luxurious resorts but also for its eco-friendly lifestyle close to nature.

The town of Saas-Fee, situated in the Alps, is renowned for its spectacular scenery.

Saas-Fee is located 200km from Bern, the capital of Switzerland, about a two-hour train ride to Visp and then a one-hour bus ride. It's a famous ski town. Every winter, especially during Christmas, many people visit to immerse themselves in the pristine white landscape of snow, the warm wooden houses, and the vast pine forests on the mountainside. Situated in the Alps, this town is not only renowned for its spectacular scenery and exciting skiing activities but is also known as a symbol of green living and environmental protection, demonstrating a harmonious blend of tourism and nature conservation.

The zero-emission village

Saas-Fee, dubbed the "Pearl of the Alps," has developed a sustainable tourism model where preserving the natural environment is a top priority. The town has made significant strides in minimizing its negative environmental impact by restricting private vehicle use and encouraging the use of electric vehicles. This has earned Saas-Fee the nickname "Zero-Emission Village."

One of the defining features of Saas-Fee is the ban on fossil fuel-powered cars within the village. This helps protect the area's clean air while creating a peaceful and safe environment for tourists and locals alike. To get around the village, residents and visitors use electric vehicles, walk, or cycle, contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Since 1951, the local authorities have banned all motorized vehicles to prevent environmental pollution. All public transport, such as buses and trucks, is now electric.

Mount Allalin, covered in snow year-round, rises to an altitude of 4,027 meters and boasts the largest ski complex in the region. Reaching it requires a nearly 30-minute cable car ride along with the world's highest metro train, traversing the heart of the snow-capped mountain. At the summit of Allalin lies a revolving restaurant, considered the world's highest at 3,500 meters, and frequently featured in magazines as one of the restaurants with the most stunning views.

Not only famous for its ski resorts, Saas-Fee also boasts some of the most beautiful hiking trails in Europe. After taking a cable car to the summit of Mount Hannig at an altitude of 2,340m, visitors can hike back down the mountain along a trail, admiring the breathtaking scenery of the blue sky blending with the mountains and the green of the pine forests.

Saas-Fee also focuses on raising environmental awareness among the community and tourists. Educational programs on environmental protection and sustainable development are regularly organized, helping people better understand the importance of protecting nature.
