Dalot was once considered one of Ruben Amorim's most loyal players at Manchester United. However, looking back at his role under Erik ten Hag, Dalot showed that he only truly thrived when used correctly.
When Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford, he had to make a choice that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had previously handled quite clearly. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was Solskjaer's preferred right-back, while Dalot had previously been loaned to AC Milan and was not a first-choice option.
However, by the end of Ten Hag's second season, Dalot was voted Player of the Season by his teammates. At that time, MU salvaged the season by winning the FA Cup after defeating Man City. The change came from how Ten Hag exploited the Portuguese defender's ball-playing abilities.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand's "Rio Ferdinand Presents" program, Dalot said: "Ten Hag saw in me qualities with the ball that no previous coach had recognized. When I kicked the ball upfield, I played the role of a number 6. I practiced one-two passes and turns under pressure to find Bruno in the number 10 position."
"I knew I could do that in terms of build-up play. At that stage, I was a number 6 and I moved into the center a lot. The important thing was that I felt trusted by Ten Hag," Dalot emphasized.

But under Amorim, he was often pushed further forward as a purely attacking wing-back. Dalot frequently appeared in the opponent's third of the field and had to finish chances. That wasn't his strong point.
Being placed in a role that demands speed, dribbling, and goal-scoring ability has exposed Dalot's limitations. He has been criticized for missed opportunities, even though he is not inherently a player who relies on finishing chances.
Dalot's improvement after Amorim left shows that the problem wasn't entirely about individual form. In modern football, a player can thrive or decline simply because of a change in role. With Dalot, being returned to his proper position made a clear difference under Carrick.
