As predicted by experts, Liverpool capitalized on their home advantage at Anfield to come from behind against Galatasaray in the Champions League round of 16. Despite losing 0-1 in the first leg, Arne Slot's team won convincingly 4-0 in the second leg early this morning (March 19th).
Liverpool's goals were scored by Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch, and Mohamed Salah. The Reds, along with Arsenal, are two of the six English teams to advance from the Round of 16 in the 2025/26 season.
For Salah personally, this was a memorable match as he reached a significant milestone in his career. The goal that sealed the victory against Galatasaray was the Egyptian "King of Egypt's" 50th goal in the Champions League. He became the first African player in history to achieve this feat.
But this has been a serious dip in Salah's form compared to last season. The goal against Galatasaray was only his 10th goal across all competitions for Liverpool this season. This is perhaps one of the rare seasons where Salah hasn't reached the 20-goal mark for Liverpool.
In this match, Florian Wirtz did not score but went into Liverpool history as the player with the most chances created (8) in a Champions League match. But the German midfielder needs to be more direct and effective to be worth his £116 million price tag.
Having overcome Galatasaray, Liverpool will face PSG in the quarter-finals. This is the next big challenge for Arne Slot's team, as PSG just thrashed Chelsea with an aggregate score of 8-2 in the round of 16.
