Samsung accelerates its efforts to regain its position in the AI chip race.
This is the group's highest investment ever, a 22% increase compared to 2025, aimed at regaining its leading position in the AI chip sector from SK Hynix – the company currently dominating the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) segment supplied to Nvidia.
This move reflects Samsung's strategic shift toward the booming demand for AI. At the annual shareholders' meeting, Samsung Electronics co-CEO Jun Young-hyun stated that the development of next-generation AI is strongly driving orders, not only for HBM memory but also for server storage solutions. Therefore, Samsung will focus on next-generation AI chips and advanced manufacturing technologies.
This investment is equivalent to more than half of Samsung's projected operating profit for 2026. Analysts expect the company's operating profit to more than quadruple, reaching a record 202.6 trillion won, thanks to its early advantage in the HBM4 chip market. In fact, Samsung has become the first company to successfully commercialize the HBM4 chip, thereby regaining a technological advantage after a period of lagging behind its competitors.
Samsung's recovery is further bolstered by key collaborations. At Nvidia's recent annual technology event, the company introduced its new generation HBM4E chip and received support from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. In addition, Samsung also reached an agreement to supply HBM4 chips to Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), thereby strengthening its role in the AI hardware ecosystem.
In parallel, Samsung also plans to supply HBM4 chips to OpenAI – the company that developed the ChatGPT chatbot – to power its first in-house AI processor. It is expected that in the second half of this year, Samsung will supply up to 800 million GB of 12-layer HBM4 chips to OpenAI. These chips will be integrated with the AI processor developed by OpenAI in collaboration with Broadcom, and are expected to be manufactured by TSMC of Taiwan ( China ) starting in Q3 2026, before launch at the end of the year.
