Singapore: The highlight of Changi Airport's newly reopened Terminal 2 is a 14-meter-high virtual waterfall and a robot that mixes cocktails for passengers.

After 3.5 years of expansion, Terminal 2 (T2) at Changi Airport fully reopened ahead of schedule in early November. The T2 expansion enables Changi to handle an additional 5 million passengers annually, bringing the airport's total handling capacity to 90 million passengers per year.

The design of Terminal 2 is inspired by nature. Natural elements are seamlessly and consistently incorporated throughout the terminal, from the ceilings to the walls, carpet patterns, and plant displays. Lush green columns contribute to a serene atmosphere, providing peace and relaxation for passengers, according to Changi Airport representatives.

The most striking feature of this terminal is located in the center of the departure hall: a 14-meter-tall digital screen called The Wonderfall. Situated amidst a vertical garden, The Wonderfall blends seamlessly into nature with the image of a giant virtual waterfall. Changi hopes this virtual waterfall will transport visitors into a fantastical world and promises to become a popular photo spot.

Inside the transit area is a new garden called Dreamscape, featuring rows of trees nestled within a meticulously crafted landscape, brought to life by a "digital sky" above that changes color depending on the time of day.

During their transit, travelers can stop by the newly opened Lotte Duty Free Wines & Spirits. The two-story store features Toni, a robotic bartender, to serve customers. Above the bar, a 30-meter-circumference LED light ring projects an image of the moon reflected on a lake, inspired by the famous work of Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai , "Drinking Alone Under the Moonlight."

Terminal 2 has been expanded by over 21,000 square meters to provide space for infrastructure and increase the number of service counters. With a shared Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) area in the center, the number of self-service kiosks and baggage drop-off machines has nearly doubled. Immigration offices have been expanded, and the number of lanes has been increased to reduce long queues for travelers.

Terminal 2 is also the first terminal at Changi to have an automated Special Assistance lane for people with disabilities and young children during immigration and customs procedures. The newly installed automated baggage check-in system has a capacity to handle 2,400 suitcases.

Sixteen airlines operate flights at Terminal 2, connecting to 40 cities. Nearly 10 million passengers have been served at Terminal 2 since May 2022 when the southern area of the terminal was first reopened. In September 2023, passenger traffic at Changi reached 90% of pre-pandemic levels.

"We hope T2 will set a new benchmark for customer service, and that people will find great joy and discover wonders whenever they pass through T2," said Tan Lye Teck, the lead project manager for the T2 expansion.
