| Ms. Luc Thi Tam's family is recovering from the aftermath of the floods. |
At the peak of the flood, the entire Kim Van village was cut off for 42 days. Of the total number of households, 17 were completely submerged, with water levels rising to 15 to 20 meters in many areas; dozens of other households were also directly affected. More than 70 hectares were flooded, including over 20 hectares of crops completely destroyed. Houses and property were damaged, livelihoods were disrupted, and people's lives were plunged into extreme hardship.
The family of Ms. Luc Thi Tam, who runs a grocery store in the village, is one of the families that suffered heavy losses. When the flood hit, all their goods were swept away. Their newly built house was also severely affected, with damages amounting to hundreds of millions of dong. “After the water receded, my family had to repair the house and restock goods to continue selling during the year-end season. Difficulties are piling up, but we have to try our best to continue living,” Ms. Tam shared.
Amidst the vast floodwaters, Nong Thiem Tan's family tried to save their most valuable asset: their flock of chickens. The water rose so quickly that the family only had time to evacuate people; all other possessions had to be left behind. He tied the chickens to a raft and left them adrift on the water for over 40 days. Every few days, he would row out to feed them.
“It’s our only remaining source of livelihood, so we have to preserve it, no matter how difficult it is. Now that the water has receded, we’re focusing on repairs to stabilize our lives in the short term. We, the people, are hoping for a resettlement area soon so we can build new homes and no longer have to worry about storms and floods,” said Mr. Tan.

In that situation, the timely support of the local government, functional forces, and the sharing from the community gave the people of Kim Van the motivation to overcome the hardships.
Ms. Dinh Thi Nhon, a villager, said: "With the help of the State and philanthropists, we have been able to gradually stabilize our lives, and our houses have been rebuilt with the help of the Army."
Although life has gradually returned to normal, the worry about the rainy season and floods remains ever-present.
