During the visit of General Secretary and President To Lam to China, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the General Administration of Customs of China signed three protocols, paving the way for Vietnamese agricultural products, including a protocol on the export of frozen durian.

Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan affirmed that this will contribute to strongly promoting agricultural exports, especially those products recently contracted with the Chinese market, contributing to the growth of Vietnam's agricultural sector.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, frozen durian is a new product with higher added value compared to fresh durian. Opening the market for durian products will help diversify processing, reduce pressure on the harvesting season, and create greater added value for the durian industry.

China is currently the largest export market for Vietnamese agricultural products, with Vietnam being the second largest supplier of fresh durian to China. Vietnamese durian is considered to have the advantage of abundant production, year-round harvesting, and, especially during peak season, less competition from Thai durian. Furthermore, Vietnamese durian exports to China benefit from fast shipping times and competitive pricing. These factors have helped Vietnamese durian make significant strides in the Chinese market in less than two years since its opening.

Estimates from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association show that in 2023, Vietnam exported approximately 500,000 tons of durian, earning $2.3 billion, with exports to China accounting for 90%. In the first seven months of 2024 alone, Vietnam's durian exports to this market reached $1.22 billion, a 46% increase compared to the same period last year, accounting for 92.4% of total durian exports.

Following the signing of the agreement, it is projected that frozen durian exports could reach $400-500 million USD in 2024 – the first year after the signing of the protocol – and soon join the list of agricultural export products worth "billions of dollars" by 2025. Experts believe that the export value of the durian industry could reach $3.5 billion USD in the future, not stopping at the current figure of over $2 billion USD.
