The highlight of the December 13th competition day was athletics. Vietnamese fans focused their attention on the golden girl Nguyen Thi Oanh as she competed in the women's 5,000m final at 6:45 PM. Having won four gold medals at the previous SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh decided to participate in only three events this time: the 5,000m, 3,000m steeplechase, and 10,000m. Her goal was to win all three gold medals for Vietnamese athletics. Other promising Vietnamese athletes competing included Vu Thi Ngoc Ha and Nguyen Thi Huong (women's triple jump), and Nguyen Trung Cuong and Le Tien Long (men's 5,000m)...
In the women's 5,000m event, Vietnam's athletics team had athletes Nguyen Thi Oanh and Le Thi Tuyet. The two Vietnamese runners broke away from the pack right from the first laps and were more than one lap ahead of their opponents. Nguyen Thi Oanh crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 16 minutes 27 seconds 14, winning the gold medal, while Le Thi Tuyet took home the silver medal.
Less than an hour later, the Vietnamese athletics team, consisting of Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Nguyen Thi Hang, Ta Ngoc Tuong, and Le Ngoc Phuc, won the gold medal in the 4x400m relay. The Vietnamese team's time was 3 minutes 15 seconds 07, breaking the SEA Games record.
Meanwhile, athlete Le Thi Cam Tu finished second in the women's 200m race with a time of 23.14 seconds and won the silver medal.
* On December 13th – the fourth official day of competition at the 33rd SEA Games – the karate team opened the scoring with a gold medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation when martial artist Hoang Thi My Tam brilliantly won the women's kumite 61kg event. In the final match, Hoang Thi My Tam completely dominated the home team's fighter, Butsuwan Maneevan from Thailand. With her proactive, high-speed fighting style and accurate strikes, the Vietnamese fighter quickly took control of the match and won convincingly with a score of 11-2, thus bringing home the first gold medal of the day for the Vietnamese sports delegation.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, My Tam defeated Thin Zar Yoon (Myanmar) to advance to the final. Notably, despite competing in a weight class higher than her usual one, the female athlete still demonstrated the skill and class of one of the continent's top fighters.
Hoang Thi My Tam is considered the number one hope for Vietnamese karate. Before the 33rd SEA Games, the female martial artist had won the Asian individual championships three times in 2021, 2024, and 2025 in the 55kg weight category. Moving up to 61kg not only didn't affect her performance but also demonstrated the young martial artist's impressive adaptability and competitive spirit.
At a very young age, Hoang Thi My Tam has amassed an impressive record with numerous gold medals at Asian competitions and two gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games. Therefore, she is affectionately called the "golden girl" of Vietnamese karate by experts and fans alike.
On the same day of competition, Nguyen Thanh Truong and Dinh Thi Huong brilliantly won a "hat-trick" of gold medals for Vietnamese karate; taekwondo fighter Tran Thi Anh Tuyet also contributed one gold medal to Vietnamese sports.
Also on December 13th, in badminton, the pair Vu Thi Trang and Bui Bich Phuong were eliminated in the semi-finals of the women's doubles event by the Indonesian pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspita Sari, thus winning the bronze medal - the first medal for Vietnamese badminton at this year's Games.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's shooting team, consisting of Le Thi Mong Tuyen, Nguyen Thi Thao, and Phi Thanh Thao, won the silver medal in the 10m air rifle team event with a total score of 1,872.8, finishing behind Indonesia. Notably, Phi Thanh Thao, along with Indonesian shooter Karini Dominique Rachmawati, also set a SEA Games record with a total individual score of 627.6.
Meanwhile, in the "blue lane," the Vietnamese swimming team continued to add medals. In the men's 200m freestyle, Tran Van Nguyen Quoc performed impressively, finishing second with a time of 1 minute 47 seconds 70 to win the silver medal. His teammate, Nguyen Huy Hoang, finished fourth with a time of 1 minute 50 seconds 68, missing out on a podium finish. Athlete Nguyen Thuy Hien also brought home a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke.
Meanwhile, athlete Vo Thi My Tien won the silver medal in the 400m individual medley. The female athlete started well but was then overtaken by her Thai opponent. A last-ditch effort helped My Tien finish second, winning the silver medal with a time of 4 minutes 47 seconds 39.
Meanwhile, athlete Nguyen Thuy Hien won the bronze medal in the women's 100m breaststroke with a time of 1 minute 10 seconds 40. First place went to Singaporean athlete En Letitia Sim (time 1 minute 06 seconds 79), and second place to En Phee (Malaysia, time 1 minute 10 seconds 09).
In weightlifting, young weightlifter K'Duong continued to show great potential by winning a bronze medal in the men's under 60kg category. The 19-year-old athlete lifted 125kg in the snatch and 164kg in the clean and jerk, achieving a total lift of 289kg, placing third overall. The gold medal in this weight class went to a Thai weightlifter with a total lift of 304kg, while an Indonesian athlete won the silver medal with 295kg.
