A memorable milestone was set in the Round of 32 match against Belgium on the morning of July 2nd. Two goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr gave Senegal a 2-0 lead and brought the West African team's total number of goals in the tournament to 10.
Previously, Senegal scored one goal against France , two against Norway, and most notably, a historic 5-0 victory over Iraq. This achievement allowed "The Teranga Lions" to shatter the previous record in African football.
Prior to the 2026 World Cup , the record for most goals scored by an African team at a World Cup was only 6 goals, set by Morocco on their way to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and achieved by Senegal in the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup.
However, the joy of the record-breaking achievement could not alleviate the disappointment as Senegal inexplicably lost their chance to advance. Coach Aliou Cisse's team held a significant advantage, leading Belgium 2-0 until the 85th minute and coming very close to the round of 16.
However, in the final minutes, everything fell apart. Belgium scored two goals in quick succession in the 86th and 89th minutes to send the match into extra time. Then, in the 120th minute plus five minutes, the European side completed a spectacular comeback with a winning goal, securing a 3-2 victory and leaving Senegal on the verge of making history.
The remaining time was not enough for Senegal to find an equalizer. The African representatives sadly bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup, while Belgium secured their place in the round of 16. Romelu Lukaku and his teammates' next opponent will be either the USA or Bosnia.
