Shock: Lyon relegated.

On the evening of June 24th (local time), the French Professional Football Clubs Financial Control Organization (DNCG) officially decided to relegate Lyon to Ligue 2 (French First Division) starting from the 2025-2026 season.

This is a major shock for French football, as one of the country's most traditional clubs has been relegated not because of its on-field performance, but because of serious financial problems.

DNCG stated that this decision was made after reviewing Lyon's financial records and confirmed that the club did not meet the mandatory financial requirements to maintain its position in Ligue 1.

Although Lyon had previously committed to providing additional capital and explaining the investments, DNCG stressed that "promises are not enough, we need to see real money in the account."

According to French media, Lyon is currently burdened with a massive debt, estimated at between 175 and 500 million euros, leaving their finances in a severely unbalanced state.

Owner John Textor has previously stated that the club has taken several steps to raise capital, including selling off its stake in Crystal Palace and accelerating the sale of players like Rayan Cherki. However, DNCG still believes those commitments are not convincing enough.

Following the DNCG's decision, Lyon remained calm and confirmed they would appeal within seven days.

Mr. Textor did not make an official statement after the hearing, but had previously expressed confidence, stating that "everything is fine financially." Some sources indicate that Lyon is rushing to complete the sale of shares and players to raise the necessary capital for the DNCG (Democratic and Charitable Foundation).

Sports finance expert Vincent Chaudel believes Lyon still has a chance to turn things around if they can provide sufficient documentation proving their cash flow.

However, he also warned that even if the appeal is successful, the club could still face wage spending limits or a partial transfer ban for the next season.

If the ban cannot be overturned, Lyon will be relegated to Ligue 2 for the first time since 1989. Their Ligue 1 position will most likely be given to Stade Reims, who finished 16th last season.

The Lyon case serves as a clear warning from the DNCG that financial standards in French football will not be relaxed, even for big-name clubs.

This also serves as a wake-up call regarding the simmering financial instability at many of Europe's top football clubs. A year ago, another historically significant French club, Bordeaux, was even relegated to the fourth division (amateur league) due to financial problems.

With 7 Ligue 1 titles, Lyon is the fifth most successful club in France, after PSG, Saint Etienne, Monaco, and Nantes. Last season, Lyon finished 6th in Ligue 1.

Lyon has boasted many notable stars in recent years, such as Lacazette, Cherki, Malick Fofana, Matic... However, with relegation, it is likely that these players will leave the team. Cherki has already been sold to Man City.
