In Rach Gia ward, the shopping atmosphere is more vibrant than last month. The number of customers at supermarkets and shopping centers has increased, especially in the evenings and on weekends. Essential goods, food, household appliances, and electronics are selling well. Year-end promotions, discounts, and interest-free installment plans are being implemented simultaneously, contributing to stimulating consumer demand.
Diverse consumer channels
According to small traders and businesses in Rach Gia ward, purchasing power increased by about 15-20% compared to November, mainly focusing on essential goods, household items, food, and gifts.

Ms. Tuong Vi, residing in Rach Gia ward, runs a business selling a variety of items, from children's and adult fashion to children's toys and gifts. Every day, she unpacks five shipments of children's clothing and gifts. Ms. Tuong Vi said: "At this time, I'm not selling many new items; I'm mainly offering discounts to sell off leftover sizes and discontinued items. This year, fashion has a wide variety of styles at reasonable prices, so this industry is booming. The shopping trend is gradually shifting towards online shopping and home delivery."
These days, the Nguyen Kim Kien Giang Shopping Center, Cho Lon Electronics Supermarket, Dien May Xanh chain, and other home appliance stores are seeing a surge in shoppers, with people prioritizing essential purchases. The Nguyen Kim Kien Giang Shopping Center is running a BIG BANG promotion until December 31st, offering numerous opportunities to receive gifts directly with purchases and discounted prices through live streams. The atmosphere is particularly lively in the afternoons and evenings. Ms. Tran Thi Vui, a resident of An Bien commune, who bought an iron for 99,000 VND (reduced from 399,000 VND) at Nguyen Kim, said: “I waited for the year-end sale to buy essential items; this is the most suitable time.”
Bustling Tet shopping
Currently, the consumption of vegetables, meat, fish, rice, spices, etc., remains stable, with prices staying steady and no sudden price increases recorded. At many wholesale and retail stores along Dien Bien Phu, Pham Hung, To Ngoc Van, Cach Mang Thang Tam, and Nguyen Chi Thanh streets, people mainly buy food and necessities for daily life, with confectionery as Tet gifts accounting for a large proportion.
According to Ms. Nguyen Kim Dao, who runs a general store on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, since the beginning of December, her shop has been continuously receiving orders for Tet gift baskets. Purchasing power has increased by 10-15% compared to the previous month. However, consumers tend to compare prices and prioritize products with clear origins.
At supermarkets and convenience stores, customer traffic steadily increased in the afternoon and evening. Year-end promotions and discounts contributed to stimulating consumer demand. Household goods, small electrical appliances, plastic goods, fast-moving consumer goods, and packaged confectionery recorded significant growth.
Notably, modern shopping trends continue to expand. Besides in-person purchases, many small businesses and retailers are boosting sales through social media, combined with home delivery to meet consumer demand. Pre-packaged gift items, local specialties, and year-end gift baskets are also selling quite well.
Sensible spending
Despite increased purchasing power, the market remains clearly segmented. People prioritize sensible spending, focusing on essential goods. Many small business owners report that while customer numbers have increased, the average spending per purchase has not risen significantly, reflecting a frugal mindset amidst high living costs.
At local markets, the demand for fresh food items such as pork, poultry, seafood, and vegetables has increased compared to previous months. People tend to shop early to prepare for year-end parties and the New Year. Prices remain stable, with only a slight increase in some seafood and fruit items due to high demand.
Mr. Nguyen Dai Viet, owner of a pork shop at Nguyen Thoai Hau market, said that his shop receives many home delivery orders, especially for whole roasted pigs and processed products such as sausages and spring rolls, to meet the demand during holidays and the end of the Gregorian calendar year.
Overall, the consumer market in Rach Gia ward and surrounding areas maintained a positive growth rate, creating a vibrant shopping atmosphere. This is considered a positive sign for local trade and services, and also serves as a "launching pad" for the peak shopping season of the Lunar New Year.
To ensure market stability at the end of the year, guaranteeing supply, stabilizing prices, and controlling product quality remain key factors in meeting people's consumer needs.
