This landslide area is located on the right bank of the Saigon River, part of the national inland waterway, approximately 2km downstream from Phu Long Bridge (connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Binh Duong ) (Thanh Loc Ward, District 12).
According to reports, the landslide extends approximately 40 meters along the riverbank and about 20 meters inland, in an area where a family is operating a coffee shop. Immediately after the landslide occurred on August 4th, the coffee shop owner ceased operations.
In addition to the landslide, about 16-20m inland, the riverbank also shows several cracks ranging from 6-10cm in width and approximately 30m in length along the river.
A representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that this landslide location is not on the list of particularly dangerous landslide-prone areas as announced by the City People's Committee in October 2022. The Department has sent a document to relevant units to develop plans to ensure safety.
According to the Department of Transport, the preliminary cause has been identified as a large tidal range, strong current, and weak soil. There were no casualties in the landslide. However, some land near the shore and some business equipment were swept away.
In late June 2023, Ho Chi Minh City also discovered a landslide along the Thanh Da canal bank - section 1.1 in Binh Thanh district. The landslide covered an area of approximately 168m along the embankment, with a width of 15m from the top of the embankment inwards. The landslide did not cause any casualties but affected 15 houses, most of which suffered cracked walls, subsidence, and tilting towards the canal, with the possibility of further landslides towards the river.
The Department of Transport has proposed that the City People's Committee approve the plan to construct a 478m long, reinforced embankment along the canal. The project's land clearance area will be 10m from the top of the embankment towards the bank, with an estimated total investment of approximately 90 billion VND.
The funds are used for constructing a sturdy embankment, drainage system, and landscaped grounds, excluding compensation and land clearance costs.
