Sony wins big in the smartphone camera war.

In a recent statement to Nikkei, Sony President Yoshihiro Yamaguchi said the company has shipped a total of 20 billion digital image sensors, including those for smartphone cameras, since the product's market launch.

Sony needed just over 5 years to sell 10 billion image sensors.

Notably, Sony reached the milestone of 10 billion sensors in May 2019 and doubled that number in just over five years. According to Sony executives, the image sensor market is not yet saturated, so the company plans to increase its production capacity. One such plan is the construction of a new factory in Kumamoto Prefecture (Japan), where TSMC will be responsible for manufacturing sensor chips for the Japanese company.

Sony is starting to feel the heat from its competitors.

Despite holding a large share of the camera sensor market, Sony is also facing fierce competition from Samsung Electronics – a rival that is gradually threatening the Japanese giant's position in the field of camera components for smartphones.

In addition, some sources indicate that Apple intends to equip future iPhone models with Samsung image sensors, with at least one 48MP camera featuring a wide-angle lens supplied by Samsung. Currently, Sony remains the primary supplier of image sensors for Apple smartphones.

Sony's Q2 2024 financial report shows that revenue from image sensors increased 32%, reaching $3.4 billion, while the company's total revenue increased only 3%, to $19.44 billion. Operating profit from Sony's image sensor division also nearly doubled, reaching $589 million.
