Spotify has just announced a price increase for its Premium service in the US, from $12 to $13 per month. According to Bloomberg , this 8% increase will help the company ensure sustainable profitability.

Besides the US, other markets receiving price increase announcements this time include Estonia and Latvia. In fact, Spotify has been raising subscription prices in many countries since last year. In the US, the service has increased prices three times in the last three years.

Besides Spotify Premium, the student subscription plan in the US also increased from $6 to $7 . Other plans saw even steeper price increases, such as Spotify Duo ( $17 to $19 ) and Family ( $20 to $22 ).

Following the price increase announcement, Spotify shares rose 3% in trading that ended on January 15. The company said the change helps enhance the user experience.

"Regularly updating service prices in various markets reflects the value that Spotify delivers, allowing us to continue providing the best possible experience and benefiting artists," Spotify announced.

According to The Verge , rumors of Spotify raising prices in the US have been circulating since last year, although the exact increase is unclear. The most recent price increase for the service in the US is scheduled for June 2024, while other markets will see increases starting in August 2025, adding several AI-integrated features and lossless music quality.

According to analysts quoted by the FT , a $1 /month price increase could boost Spotify's annual revenue by an additional $500 million in 2025.

With over 280 million paying subscribers worldwide, Spotify is under pressure to raise prices to combat inflation, similar to services like Netflix.

Record labels are also putting pressure on Spotify, Apple Music, and other music streaming platforms to raise prices. For comparison, Spotify's price when it first launched in the US in 2011 was $10 per month.

The price increase comes amid slowing growth in the music industry. In September 2025, Daniel Ek, CEO and co-founder of Spotify, announced his resignation to become Chairman of the Board.

Spotify boasts a large base of loyal users who have spent years building their favorite music libraries and playlists. A 2024 survey by Antenna showed that Spotify users have the lowest subscription cancellation rate among popular music and video streaming services in the US.

In recent years, Spotify has relied on price increases to drive growth. Last year, CFO Christian Luiga stated that despite price hikes in over 150 countries, the number of customers canceling their subscriptions was negligible. This suggests that Spotify is focusing on retaining existing users rather than actively attracting new ones.

Over the past 20 years, Spotify has gradually developed into a prominent company in the music industry, with a highly profitable business model. However, the service's growth rate has slowed as the streaming market has become saturated in developed countries.

According to Bloomberg , Spotify has spent the past two years researching a new, more expensive service to cater to its loyal customer base, although the exact launch date remains unclear.
