According to TechSpot, Sonic blue hedgehog will soon have new friends who are birds in the franchise Angry Birds, as Sega has agreed to buy Rovio Entertainment for a total value of approximately 706 million euros (approximately $772 million).
Both companies said the deal was approved by Rovio's board of directors. If everything goes according to plan, the deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
During the peak of Angry Bird in 2012, Rovio reportedly turned down a $2 billion buyout offer from Zynga. The game studio from Finland was founded in 2003 as Relude before changing its name to Rovio Mobile a few years later. Rovio has made a lot of games, but the most groundbreaking game is Angry Birds completely changed the fate of the company.
The game has been a huge hit and spawned entire franchises of games, cartoons, movies, memorabilia, and more to this day. Game Angry Birds was the first to be one of 12 finalists in the 2023 World Video Game Hall of Fame.
Following the acquisition, Sega aims to leverage Rovio's expertise in live-service mobile game operations through the Beacon service, thereby bringing new and existing titles to market.
