Most notably among these are Apple Intelligence, Google Gemini, and Galaxy AI – three suites of features that come with many interesting AI applications for users. Each tool has its own noteworthy features that people should be aware of.
AI tools from Apple, Google, and Samsung share both similarities and differences.
Text-related features
Website and email summarization : Each AI assistant can summarize text in one way or another, with Apple's suite currently offering the most comprehensive options (summarizing long web pages, emails, or text in Notes), while Gemini only integrates with Gmail, and Galaxy AI can summarize web pages and notes in Samsung Notes.
Recording summaries : All three are capable of transcribing recordings and summarizing calls, allowing users to skip to relevant points in the recording by tapping on a piece of text in the summary.
Transcription Call : All three can record calls and then leave the relevant transcript in their respective note-taking applications. This is useful when users are setting up a meeting or getting a phone number from the person on the other end of the line.
Live call translation : Both Pixel and Galaxy phones offer live translation during calls between several major languages. This feature isn't perfect, but it can be useful in certain situations.
Galaxy AI can summarize emails and notes in Samsung Notes.
Intelligent responses : Language models can fairly accurately interpret the content of messages users receive, then generate more detailed responses for them. Apple AI and Gemini can do this in email and text messages, while Galaxy AI currently only does it in the Messages app.
Text editing and rewriting : Users can ask these AIs to neatly organize text, compose entire paragraphs, or change the tone and style of a section of text. Apple, in particular, has the assistance of ChatGPT, which is very useful.
Image-related features
Image creation : Apple has its own Image Playground that helps create cartoon-style images, but it's not very diverse or useful. However, ChatGPT support in iOS 18 helps it create more realistic images or images in various styles. Google's Pixel Studio is also slightly better at creating cartoon images but is still somewhat limited in that it refuses to create human figures. Meanwhile, Galaxy AI can create images from hand-drawn sketches but lacks features for creating images from text prompts or emoji generators like Apple's Genmoji or Google's Emoji Lab.
Visual Search : Apple AI has a new Visual Intelligence feature that uses the camera to identify objects. Both Google and Galaxy phones have Gemini with camera access, which works quite similarly to Visual Intelligence. There's also Circle to Search for performing image searches of anything currently on the screen.
AI tools can remove unwanted objects from images.
Magic Eraser : This feature has been available on Galaxy and Google phones for a long time before it was attributed to AI. Specifically, Magic Eraser is a "recreating eraser" tool that can remove any object from a photo and attempt to recreate the lost background based on the surrounding context. Apple currently has a Clean Up tool in Photos, which has a similar function.
Automatically cropping subjects from photos : Again, this existed before the AI craze. Basically, users can tap and hold on an object in a photo, and the software will "determine" its boundaries and remove it from the image. Then, they can drag it to paste into another app or create a copy of that image with a transparent background.
They can also understand context and multi-layered commands, with Gemini leading the way, although Apple will likely be doing a major overhaul of Siri in March of this year. Bixby, on the other hand, is lagging behind but seems poised to become smarter with One UI 7, expected to launch alongside the Galaxy S25 series early this year.
