The 'special mission' of journalism

(PLVN) - Whenever the mission of journalism is mentioned, people often refer to its role in informing and disseminating information on political, economic, cultural, and social issues. However, besides that, journalism also undertakes a special mission: a humanitarian mission. Through this, it contributes to improving the quality of social welfare policies and spreading good and positive things in life.

The humanitarian mission of the writer

Over the years, caring for the vulnerable and disadvantaged, as well as those facing life's risks, has been a consistent and overarching policy of our Party, reflecting the humanistic and compassionate nature of our regime. At the same time, it inherits and promotes the Vietnamese tradition of mutual support, "helping those in need," and "loving others as oneself."

This policy has been institutionalized in the Vietnamese Constitution and laws throughout various periods; it has been concretized in socio -economic development strategies and plans appropriate to each stage of the country's development. Most recently, in Resolution No. 42-NQ/TW, dated November 24, 2023, of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, "On continuing to innovate and improve the quality of social policies to meet the requirements of national construction and defense in the new period," the Party reaffirmed: Social policy is policy for people, by the people. Notably, Resolution No. 42-NQ/TW marks a very important new point by expanding social policy coverage to all groups of people; aiming for Vietnam to be among the countries with a high Human Development Index (HDI) in the world by 2045.

However, realizing the aforementioned goal is not easy. According to the latest figures from relevant agencies, the country currently has approximately 1.2 million poor and near-poor households according to the multidimensional poverty standard; about 9.2 million people who have rendered meritorious services to the revolution, of which more than 1.4 million are receiving monthly preferential allowances. Not to mention, the rapid aging of the population, increasingly severe climate change; frequent natural disasters, floods, and landslides leaving devastating consequences… These are all challenges that create significant pressure on social security policies.

In this context, improving the quality of social security policies cannot rely solely on the efforts of the State, but requires the joint efforts of the entire society. The State's "core" role in addressing social issues is gradually shifting to a "leading" role, coupled with the important role of businesses, the market, social organizations, and the self-reliance and self-improvement of the people. In this context, the press is one of the important factors contributing to this process.

In addition to effectively disseminating information and promoting the Party and State's policies on social welfare, the press is also a pioneering force in calling for, organizing, and supporting these activities. Through the timely dissemination of campaigns and appeals from Party committees, government agencies, organizations, and benevolent individuals, the press becomes a bridge connecting charitable hearts with the poor and disadvantaged. The press also closely reflects the situation of natural disasters, epidemics, difficult circumstances, acts of gratitude, and care for those who have contributed to the revolution… thereby promoting social responsibility and mobilizing the collective efforts of the entire community, especially the participation of businesses with significant financial resources.

Thus, at some point, journalism gradually became associated with a special mission: a humanitarian mission. Throughout this time, reporters and journalists have silently contributed their efforts. Beyond providing information through words, images, and reports, they have also directly participated in charitable activities. Media outlets have become trusted sources of support for benevolent hearts, acting as intermediaries to help those in need. As a result, many meaningful programs have spread widely, such as the "Leaving No One Behind" movement, the "Fund for the Poor," the "Gratitude and Repayment" campaign, and campaigns to eliminate dilapidated and substandard housing… contributing significantly to improving the quality of social welfare policies and spreading positive values in life.

Vietnam Law Newspaper and its journey of sharing love.

As one of the leading media organizations in fulfilling its humanitarian mission, the Vietnam Law Newspaper has not only successfully completed its information and propaganda tasks in the fields of politics , economics, culture, and society, but has also actively participated in connecting and supporting those in difficult circumstances in society. Under the guidance and leadership of the Party Committee and the Editorial Board, the newspaper always focuses on promoting the humanitarian role of journalism, encouraging journalists, reporters, and employees to become a bridge between philanthropists and those less fortunate. Many practical charitable programs have been organized with the direct contributions of journalists, reporters, and employees.

Typically, after Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi), when many localities in Northern Vietnam suffered heavy damage from floods, Dr. Vu Hoai Nam - Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Law Newspaper - promptly directed the formation of a relief task force. With the support of philanthropists, the task force brought hundreds of gift packages and essential supplies directly to the people in the Northern provinces. Remarkably, to prepare for this meaningful trip, the team of journalists, reporters, and workers worked tirelessly for many days, personally sorting and packaging each gift package with all their dedication and compassion for the flood-affected people.

Not only is the Vietnam Law Newspaper present at the right time during times of need for support from compatriots facing natural disasters and calamities, but it also persistently carries out a series of annual social activities with a strong humanitarian imprint. Notable examples include: "Journeys to Nurture the Soul" - a tribute to Central Vietnam in July; the "Military-Civilian Tet" program with the inauguration of the Vietnam Law Bridge; the awarding of houses of compassion and Tet gifts to policy beneficiary families and poor households with particularly difficult circumstances; joining hands to eliminate temporary housing; visiting and honoring those who have contributed to the revolution; donating "Book Libraries for Children"; and the "Joining Hands to Eradicate Legal Poverty" series of activities directed towards border and island areas…

In particular, a prominent highlight, and a cherished tradition of the Vietnam Law Newspaper over the years, is the "Judicial Shelter" donation program. This is a practical activity with profound humanitarian significance, aimed at supporting particularly disadvantaged officials in the judicial sector, policy beneficiary families, and poor households nationwide. Hundreds of houses have been donated, providing not only stable housing but also demonstrating the newspaper's care, encouragement, and support, helping to alleviate difficulties and allowing judicial officials at the grassroots level to feel more secure and committed to their profession.

Recently, throughout April, May, and June, Dr. Vu Hoai Nam and the newspaper's delegation organized handover ceremonies for several "Judicial Shelter" houses to poor families with particularly difficult circumstances in provinces across the country such as Ha Tinh, Thai Binh, Yen Bai, etc. These spacious houses, built with the joint efforts of philanthropists, not only have material significance but also provide immense spiritual encouragement to three families, helping them overcome difficult times and stabilize their daily lives.

Speaking at a ceremony in Ha Tinh, Dr. Vu Hoai Nam emphasized that building "Judicial Shelters" not only provides material support but also symbolizes humanity, sharing, and love in society. "We believe that each house not only provides shelter but also serves as a spiritual support for the people. It's a place where they feel cared for, loved, and surrounded by the community. 'Judicial Shelters' is not just a charity program, but also our commitment to continue accompanying those facing hardship, helping them to stand up and overcome adversity," the Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Law Newspaper expressed.

It is evident that, through concrete and practical actions, the Vietnam Law Newspaper in particular and the press in general have contributed to spreading the spirit of compassion, placing people at the center, and promoting empathy and sharing. The road ahead is still full of challenges, but with a sense of responsibility and a golden heart, the Vietnamese press will certainly continue to make positive contributions to improving the quality of social welfare, for a sustainably developed country where no one is left behind.
