According to CNET , rumors that the Nintendo Switch 2 will allow users to use the Joy-Con controllers as a real computer mouse appear to have been confirmed, through two recently published patents.

These patents, filed in Japan in August 2023, contain numerous detailed drawings of the Switch 2 and Joy-Con, including images of the Joy-Con being used as a 'novel' input device, with the inside facing down on the table and fingers placed on the buttons.

The patent description also mentions the use of a light sensor on the inside of the Joy-Con, similar to how modern optical mice work. Notably, there are images showing users using two Joy-Cons as two mice simultaneously, or combining a traditional Joy-Con with a mouse-like Joy-Con.
This unique control function can bring novel experiences to strategy games, MOBA games, and even creative games that bear the distinctive Nintendo mark.
In addition, the second patent also reveals:
- Magnetic connection: Joy-Con controllers will connect to the Switch 2 via magnets, instead of the current sliding mechanism.
- Detachable charging dock: The Switch 2 will likely come with a separate charging dock for the Joy-Cons, supporting wireless charging.
The information from this patent has further heightened fans' anticipation for the Nintendo Direct event on April 2nd, where Nintendo is expected to officially announce the Switch 2.
