In fact, in Vietnam, data from Our World in Data (based on research by Browne et al.) shows that approximately 74% of children under 5 years old with lower respiratory tract infections are treated with antibiotics.
Even if it's a necessary medical intervention, the use of antibiotics can disrupt the gut microbiome, depleting important beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacteria that are in the process of forming.
In addition, according to the General Statistics Office, the rate of cesarean sections in Vietnam is also trending upwards, reaching 34.4% of the total number of births in 2021. Babies born via cesarean section do not go through the natural birth canal, and therefore may miss the opportunity for initial contact with the mother's microbiome.
This leads to lower levels of beneficial gut bacteria, and this imbalance can persist. According to experts, supplementing with appropriate nutritional solutions during this period is crucial to help children build a balanced microbiome.
Synbiotics support the gut microbiome and early childhood immunity.
Immunity is often associated with supplementing vitamins to boost children's ability to protect themselves from bacteria. As nutritional science advances, experts are moving towards more holistic and proactive solutions to support the gut microbiome.
In addition to probiotics and prebiotics, which have been widely studied, synbiotics are increasingly being emphasized due to their synergistic effect between beneficial bacterial strains and specific nutrients, helping to support a balanced gut microbiome more effectively than any single component.
Building upon a foundation of global scientific research, the Aptamil brand applies a specially formulated Synbiotic formula – combining Probiotic B. breve M-16V and Prebiotics scGOS/lcFOS in a 9:1 ratio. This formula was developed in Europe and is supported by clinical research evidence on Asian infants born via cesarean section.
Accordingly, the JULIUS 1 study recorded the recovery of Bifidobacteria in just 3 days, 27 times faster than the formula without Synbiotic. The JULIUS 2 study showed the ability to support the comprehensive recovery of the gut microbiome, closer to the gut ecosystem of naturally born infants, within 4 weeks. The DRAGON study also recorded sustained effectiveness after intervention, with the recovery of the Bacteroides group of bacteria up to 12 months later.
At the 2026 National Scientific Conference themed "New Trends in Synbiotics & Early Childhood Nutrition Supporting Immunity, Brain Development, and Holistic Growth in Young Children," organized by the global nutrition company Danone in collaboration with the Vietnam Pediatric Association, the role of specially formulated Synbiotics in nutritional strategies supporting the digestive system and early immune foundation for children born via cesarean section was further reinforced.

Associate Professor Amber Chiou, Deputy Director of the Institute for Future Food Research at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, stated: “Babies born via cesarean section have a different gut microbiome structure compared to babies born vaginally, particularly with lower levels of Bifidobacteria . A specially formulated Synbiotic nutritional formula helps support the establishment of a more favorable gut microbiome, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and regulating the immune response. As a result, the gut microbiome of babies born via cesarean section tends to be closer to that of babies born vaginally, contributing to a foundation for a healthy immune system.”
This specially formulated Synbiotic nutrient system, used in Aptamil's flagship products, helps support the development of the gut microbiome, digestive health, and immune system in young children.
Danone and Aptamil brand partner to provide early childhood nutrition care for children.
With over 100 years of global nutritional pioneering experience, Danone has always placed science at the heart of its development of nutritional solutions to meet the diverse needs of people of all ages and health conditions. Inheriting this legacy, the Aptamil brand, with over 50 years of in-depth research on infant nutrition, continues to support Vietnamese mothers in building a foundation for the development of immunity and brain function in their children during their early years.
Ms. Tran Thi Hoang Thu, General Director of Danone Vietnam, shared: “We continuously apply scientific research in early childhood nutrition to develop products that support healthy digestive system development, contributing to building a foundation for immunity, growth, and long-term development for children.”
