(CLO) Syria announced it has reached an agreement with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate them into state institutions.
The announcement was made on Monday (March 10) and included images of the signing ceremony between Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi.

The agreement emphasizes the unity of Syria and stipulates that "all civilian and military institutions in northeastern Syria" will be integrated "under the administration of the Syrian state, including border crossings, airports, and oil and gas fields."
The US-backed SDF has controlled a semi-autonomous region in northeastern Syria since 2015. This agreement, if implemented, would bring that territory under the full control of the Syrian central government .
This is one of the most significant developments since former President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by Syrian opposition forces led by al-Sharaa last December.
The agreement included a nationwide ceasefire in Syria and support from the SDF in fighting pro-Assad fighters. It also affirmed that the Kurds are an integral part of Syria and have their citizenship and constitutional rights guaranteed.
It remains unclear what the exact constitutional status of the territory controlled by the SDF will be and whether it will retain some degree of autonomy. However, in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Syria, there may well be demands for special status for other groups.
