Ethan Nwaneri received a 20-fold salary increase. |
The Times revealed that Nwaneri is set to receive a salary of £60,000 per week at Arsenal, a 20-fold increase from his current income of over £3,100 per week.
Arsenal will secure the young player with a new five-year contract, ensuring the talent remains at the Emirates Stadium at least until 2030. In addition, the 18-year-old midfielder will also receive a new shirt number after his breakthrough season with Arsenal.
Nwaneri, currently wearing the number 53 shirt, will inherit the number 22 shirt, currently worn by goalkeeper David Raya. Raya used the number 22 shirt when he initially joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford.
When he officially signed his contract last year, the Spanish star hadn't yet switched to the number 1 shirt. However, the Spanish goalkeeper will switch back to his familiar number for the "keeper of the ball" position in the 2025/26 season.
This shirt number change shows Nwaneri's transition from an academy talent to a key member of the first team. Nwaneri was promoted to the first team along with his close friend from the Hale End academy, Myles Lewis-Skelly, ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Bukayo Saka's injury in December, which sidelined the England international, opened up an opportunity for Nwaneri to play more regularly. And the young talent didn't miss the chance. With a series of mature performances, Nwaneri impressed both the coaching staff and fans, scoring 9 goals and providing 2 assists in all competitions this season.
