Ethan Nwaneri got a 20-fold raise. |
The Times revealed that Nwaneri is set to receive a salary of £60,000 a week at Arsenal, a 20-fold increase on his current income of more than £3,100 a week.
Arsenal will retain the youngster with a new five-year contract, ensuring he stays at the Emirates until at least 2030. The 18-year-old midfielder will also receive a new shirt number after his breakthrough season with Arsenal.
Nwaneri, who currently wears the number 53 shirt, will inherit the number 22 shirt, currently worn by goalkeeper David Raya. Raya used the number 22 shirt when he initially joined Arsenal on loan from Brentford.
When he signed his official contract last year, the Spanish star did not change to the number 1 shirt. However, the Spanish goalkeeper will change to the familiar number for the "goalkeeper" position in the 2025/26 season.
The shirt change signals Nwaneri’s transition from academy talent to first-team regular, with Nwaneri joining close friend and Hale End academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly in the first team ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Bukayo Saka's injury in December, which kept the England international out of action, opened up the opportunity for Nwaneri to play more regularly. And the youngster has not missed the opportunity. With a series of solid performances, Nwaneri has impressed both the coaching staff and fans, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in all competitions this season.
