A pillar of support to overcome difficulties
Khe Sanh commune has relatively favorable natural conditions, but due to outdated farming practices, the lives of some ethnic minority people here still face many difficulties. The family of Ms. Ho Thi Nuoi is a typical example of this situation many years ago.
Recalling those difficult times, Ms. Nuoi shared: “Before, my family was very poor. We toiled in the fields year-round, but we still didn't have enough food to eat or clothes to wear. The old production methods and low-yielding crops meant that hunger and poverty clung to us, and raising our children was very challenging.”
Despite hard work, traditional production models yield low economic returns due to a lack of scientific and technical knowledge. This is a common concern for local authorities and farmers' associations at all levels in their efforts to alleviate poverty.

Nuoi's family life changed when national target programs on sustainable poverty reduction and socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas were strongly implemented. A few years ago, through the assessment of the village and commune, her family received support in the form of 4 breeding cows as startup capital.
Instead of letting the cattle roam freely as before, she built a well-organized system of barns for confined breeding, utilizing the abundant local grass resources and growing additional grass for feed reserves. Thanks to the close technical support from agricultural officials and the Farmers' Association of the commune, her family's herd of cattle is healthy and free from disease. To date, the herd has reproduced and grown to nearly 10 cows.
Diversify production models
The Khe Sanh Commune Farmers' Association also coordinated with the Social Policy Bank to help Ms. Nuoi's family access preferential loans to invest in fertilizers, seedlings, and soil improvement, helping her realize her plan to expand production. With a thirst for learning, after attending training courses, she realized that the local climate was suitable for industrial crops, so she boldly planted 1 hectare of coffee, 1 hectare of cassava, 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of rice, and nearly 1 sao (approximately 0.1 hectares) of tea. The diverse combination of livestock farming and crop cultivation has yielded clear results.
Currently, her family's total income exceeds 100 million VND per year. This stable income not only helped her pay off her debts but also allowed her to build a sturdy house, purchase modern amenities, and significantly improve her quality of life. Ms. Nuoi's model has become a shining example of overcoming difficulties and effectively utilizing borrowed capital to achieve legitimate wealth in the local area.
Thinking she had to set an example for other poor households in the village and commune to follow, at the end of 2024, she discussed with her husband and proactively wrote a letter requesting to be removed from the list of poor households. The voluntary removal from the list of poor households by Ms. Nuoi's family not only affirms the self-respect and self-reliance of the working people but also creates a positive ripple effect, encouraging other households in the village to have more motivation to improve their lives. “My family is very grateful to the Party and the State for their care and support in terms of livestock, technology, and preferential loans. Now that we have escaped poverty, I am very happy. In the future, I will continue to maintain and develop this economic model more effectively to ensure a stable life in the long term,” Ms. Nuoi said emotionally.
Chairman of the Khe Sanh Commune Farmers' Association, Dinh Truong Hung, said: “Ms. Ho Thi Nuoi's family is one of the typical ethnic minority households that has effectively utilized support to achieve a relatively prosperous life. This is a shining example for us to continue to replicate.” According to Mr. Hung, in implementing the Resolution of the 1st Party Congress of the commune, term 2025-2030, the Commune Farmers' Association will continue to promote propaganda, technical support, and capital for the people, especially poor members. The goal is to create a strong transformation in awareness and action, helping people find suitable economic directions, contributing to the successful achievement of sustainable poverty reduction and new rural development goals in the locality.
