Poet Nguyen Lam Thang reminisces about his teacher from his time as a teacher, teaching Sino-Vietnamese studies at Hue University of Education. The emotional nuances of these poet-teachers also serve as a heartfelt tribute to "the day of the profession" - Vietnamese Teachers' Day, November 20th.
A story of ten years
Ten years is not a fairy tale.
Your eyes, always hold a cherished dream.
The river flows to the sea, echoing words of love.
The green lines, always a rendezvous.
***
Those days of the past, so close in my mind.
My sweet girl, the sunlight in the schoolyard is so gentle.
The shirt remains white, amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
Days filled with joy and burning love.
***
Ten years, so many memories in the blink of an eye.
My dearest, your eyes are still so captivating.
The shirt remains white, and I still believe in love for everything.
Ten years, what a beautiful golden dream!
Dinh Lang
A poem dedicated to the teacher.
Like a thousand surging waves
Sweet, loving embrace
The time when the pollen dust still lingers
The teacher's hair reflects the joys and sorrows of the passing years.
***
The teacher's heart is engraved with the word "heart."
So many ferry journeys, so much noble kindness.
A teacher's love encompasses the vast ocean and the sky.
The words I wrote in my poem have become words… carried away by the clouds.
***
For so many years, I've been a teacher.
Also, they ferryed many full boats across the river.
But why do I still feel this way in my heart?
I haven't fulfilled my teacher's expectations yet.
***
My writing is clumsy tonight.
I offer this small token of my appreciation to you, teacher.
The six-eight verse is not yet complete.
The poem you wrote is still… unfinished.
