Creating livelihoods for the poor.

Implementing the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction in the period 2021-2025, Phu Ninh district has implemented many programs and projects to support livelihoods, helping people escape poverty and develop the economy in a sustainable direction. Among them, the project on diversifying livelihoods and developing poverty reduction models will be the "fishing rod" to help poor households escape poverty.

Leaders of Phù Ninh district presented breeding cows to poor households in Phú Lộc commune.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung, a poor household in Zone 1, Phu Loc commune, said: “Thanks to the attention of the local government, in mid-August 2024, my family received a breeding cow from the project on diversifying livelihoods and developing poverty reduction models. Participating in the project, I received training from agricultural and veterinary extension officers on how to build barns, raise and care for the cows, prevent and treat diseases, protect them from hunger and cold, and receive guidance on planting and caring for grass. After more than a month of care, the cow is currently growing and developing well.”

It is known that Ms. Nhung's family is one of 15 poor households with difficult circumstances that received support in the form of breeding Sindhi crossbred cows from the Community Production Group of Phu Loc commune, under the project on diversifying livelihoods and developing poverty reduction models, part of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction giai đoạn 2021 - 2025 in Phu Ninh district. The supplier of the breeding stock is Minh Long Agricultural and Forestry Technology Transfer and Tourism Trading Joint Stock Company (Ba Vi district, Hanoi). Each cow delivered to the villagers weighs over 200kg, is 15-20 months old, healthy, and has been vaccinated against diseases.

Following the motto "Give a fishing rod, not a fish," and in accordance with the directives of Phu Ninh district, the District Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs and the District Fatherland Front Committee, in coordination with communes and towns in the area, conducted a review of the needs of poor and near-poor households and those with difficult circumstances. They organized visits for residents to reputable seed suppliers, carefully selecting high-quality seeds to deliver to households for farming.

Comrade Trinh Duc Lai - Vice Chairman of the Phu Ninh District People's Committee, said: “Implementing the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction, Phu Ninh district has focused resources and conditions on supporting the poor, including implementing projects to diversify livelihoods and achieve sustainable poverty reduction for poor, near-poor, and newly-escaped-from-poverty households. The provision of breeding cows to poor and disadvantaged households in the district is a very meaningful and practical act. Through this program, we want to diversify livelihoods for the people, helping the truly poor to have new ways of doing business to improve their lives, increase their income, escape poverty sustainably, and contribute to ensuring social security in the district.”

Funded by the livelihood diversification and poverty reduction model development project under the National Target Program for Poverty Reduction, Phu Ninh district has invested in 121 breeding cows for poor, near-poor, and newly-escaped-from-poverty households in the communes of Phu Loc, Binh Phu, Ha Giap, Tien Phu, Phu My, Phu Ninh, Phu Nham, and Tram Than. To date, the project has gained the trust and positive response of the people, providing motivation for poor households to improve their economic conditions and offering opportunities for many households to escape poverty each year. This has contributed to reducing the poverty and near-poverty rate and promoting local socio-economic development.
