Ms. Trinh Bich Tuyen presented Tet gifts to near-poor and disadvantaged households in Thot Not ward.
In Thot Not ward, the Trade Union of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies in Can Tho City recently coordinated with the local authorities to present 100 Tet gifts to near-poor and disadvantaged households; each gift worth 500,000 VND in cash along with essential goods.
Receiving the thoughtful gift, Ms. Van Hong Phuong from Long Thanh 1 area, Thot Not ward, was deeply moved. Formerly a poor household, thanks to the "leverage" of preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank, her family has strived to overcome difficulties. What Ms. Phuong cherishes most is that for many years, her family has had timely access to preferential loans to manage their livelihoods. She shared: “Currently, my family has borrowed 30 million VND to buy a motorbike and repair our three-wheeled vehicle. With good means of transportation, my husband can work more easily, and his income is also better than before. On the eve of the New Year, receiving this Tet gift, the care and attention of the Social Policy Bank of the city and the local government, gives my family more motivation to overcome difficulties.”
Sharing the same heartfelt emotion, Ms. Le Thi Kim Ba, residing in Thoi An 4 area, Thot Not ward, was delighted to receive Tet gifts from the Trade Union of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies (VBSP) in Can Tho City. Ms. Kim Ba is from a near-poor household; her husband passed away early, leaving her to single-handedly raise two children with serious illnesses and long-term treatment costs. Using preferential loans from the VBSP, she raises pigs, sells groceries, and recently borrowed 50 million VND to repair her dilapidated house, while also making traditional cakes to supplement her income. For her, the local government's concern and the gifts given during Tet are a source of encouragement to help her strive forward.
According to Ms. Trinh Bich Tuyen, Deputy Director of the Can Tho City Branch of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies (VBSP) and Chairwoman of the VBSP Trade Union, on the occasion of the 2026 Lunar New Year, the Trade Union organized a program to give gifts to the poor and families entitled to preferential policies in many communes and wards in the area, with a total amount of over 600 million VND. Each gift is an encouragement to help people feel more confident and secure in their work and production.
Beyond caring for the Lunar New Year, the Trade Union of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies in the city has maintained social welfare and charitable activities for many years. In 2025, the Executive Committee of the Trade Union mobilized members to contribute and support social welfare activities both within and outside the area with a total amount of 2.5 billion VND. Accordingly, the unit coordinated with the local government to award scholarships to students who overcame difficulties and excelled in their studies, with a total amount of 300 million VND; mobilized all members to donate 2 days' worth of salary to support people affected by storms and floods with an amount of over 400 million VND. The Trade Union also participated in the "Eliminating Temporary and Dilapidated Houses" program with an amount of 360 million VND; supported the construction of 2 houses in My Quoi ward; donated 4 "Great Solidarity" houses; supported the care of orphans affected by COVID-19; participated in the "Loving Leaves" program…
Simultaneously, policy credit continues to be a resource that helps many poor and near-poor households and other policy beneficiaries develop their livelihoods. In 2025, the Can Tho City branch of the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies (VBSP) will have a loan volume of VND 6,028 billion with over 108,000 borrowers. By the end of 2025, the total outstanding debt of policy credit programs will exceed VND 17,500 billion with nearly 360,000 customers still having outstanding debt. This capital contributes to supporting people in production, business, job creation, education, and improving housing conditions... together with the locality to achieve the goal of sustainable poverty reduction.
