In an effort to boost tourism, the Thai government has given the green light to a pilot program for the night-time economy , allowing nightclubs, restaurants, and entertainment venues in four provinces across the country to operate until 4 a.m.

According to the Bangkok Post, starting December 15th, some designated entertainment venues in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri, and Phuket will be allowed to sell alcohol until 4 AM. Government spokesperson Kenika Ounjit said that Thailand will also allow these venues to stay open until 6 AM on December 31st to allow people to celebrate the New Year.

The private sector believes that extending the opening hours of these nightlife venues would align with the modern tourism landscape and have the potential to boost the country's economy. However, according to Krasae Chanawongse, President of Kirk University, drinking culture must also take into account road safety and public health.

According to Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, Deputy Director-General for International Marketing at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thailand achieved tourism revenue of 1.23 trillion baht in 2022, with approximately 641 billion baht (US$18.38 billion) coming from the domestic market and the remainder from the global market. Mr. Chattan stated that extending the opening hours of nightclubs would have a similar effect to other tourism incentives, such as visa waivers.

Citing examples of nightlife venues in Singapore, South Korea, and Europe that can operate until 6 a.m., Damrongkiat Pinitkan, an official in charge of entertainment and tourism in Pattaya City, Chonburi Province, confidently stated that Pattaya's nightlife venues are ready to operate until 4 a.m. and they expect revenue to increase by 30%-40%.

According to observers, this is one of the moves to fulfill the government's commitment to economic recovery. Thailand's recent growth rate has been slower than some countries in the region, prompting the government to implement stimulus measures, particularly focusing on tourism, a key economic driver.

Thailand has also waived visa requirements for tourists from India. This policy, effective from next month and lasting until May 2024, aims to attract more tourists.
