After a tense 90 minutes that ended in a 1-1 draw, Everton and Sunderland went to a penalty shootout to decide the winner. There, Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs played the hero for Sunderland, successfully saving all three of Everton's penalties from James Garner, Thierno Barry, and Beto.
Meanwhile, Sunderland converted their penalties perfectly, with Luke O'Nien scoring the decisive shot. The Black Cats sealed the match with a 3-0 victory on penalties.
According to Opta , Everton is only the second team in FA Cup history to fail to convert a single penalty in a shootout. The previous unfortunate record belonged to Blackburn Rovers (also against Sunderland) in February 2003.
This victory helps Sunderland reach the FA Cup fourth round for the second time in the last 11 seasons, extending their impressive form from the first half of the Premier League season.
Conversely, Everton exited the competition in bitter disappointment despite fielding a strong team. The team was hampered by the absence of many key players due to injuries and suspensions.
