Success from beekeeping for honey production.

With his sharp intellect and unwavering determination to become wealthy, Mr. Dong The Chatt from Lac Song hamlet, Luong Nha commune, Thanh Son district, boldly invested in and developed a beekeeping model that has yielded high economic returns.

Born and raised in a farming family, Mr. Dong The Chatt was always concerned about finding new ways to improve his family's economic situation. Recognizing the economic benefits of beekeeping, given the local area's favorable climate and abundant forest and agricultural land, Mr. Chatt learned from experience and expanded his bee colonies from a few dozen, primarily for his family's needs. Currently, his garden has over 300 beehives. In 2020, Mr. Chatt established the Luong Nha Beekeeping Cooperative with 7 members, all beekeeping households in the commune, bringing the total number of bee colonies in the cooperative to over 500.

Beekeeping isn't a physically demanding job, but it requires meticulous techniques, diligence, and passion. Beekeepers must understand bee behavior, know which flowers bloom in which seasons to move colonies to areas with abundant nectar. Furthermore, to ensure a thriving colony, beekeepers must master techniques such as splitting colonies, creating queen bees, harvesting honey, collecting royal jelly and pollen, and especially promptly addressing issues like bee swarming or larval diseases. Appropriate measures to protect the bee colonies from cold and heat are also necessary at different times.

Leading us on a tour of his beekeeping area, Mr. Chắt shared: “Beekeeping has low investment costs, but requires high technical skills and meticulous care. Food sources, weather conditions, and climate all affect the development of bees. Therefore, in the beginning, when I first started raising and expanding the bee colony, I faced many technical difficulties. However, with a determination to commit to beekeeping for the long term, I researched and learned from many sources and collected new technical documents on beekeeping. Gradually, my family's beekeeping farm has become stable.”

Each year, the winter-spring season is the time for beekeeping. From March to May, when the longan flowers begin to bloom, it's time to start harvesting longan honey. Each colony yields 10-15 kg of honey. The market price for this product ranges from 100,000 to 150,000 VND per kg. During the spring-summer season, the bee colonies are moved to areas with more abundant flowering plants. From July onwards, the cooperative brings the bees back for beekeeping, colony expansion, and preparation for the winter-spring season.

Currently, the Luong Nha Beekeeping Cooperative is producing mainly mixed flower honey, longan honey, forest honey, apple honey, and breeding bee colonies. During favorable seasons, honey harvesting and bee breeding can generate an income of 100-150 million VND per year, resulting in high economic efficiency.

Not only is he a model rural youth excelling in production and business, but Mr. Dong The Chat is also a leading example in activities organized by the locality; he enthusiastically guides other households on beekeeping techniques, and facilitates learning and exchange of experiences among beekeeping families. He actively participates in cultural, artistic, and sports activities, environmental sanitation, and social welfare volunteer work, and encourages members of the youth union to avoid violating the law and engaging in social vices.

Comrade Ngo Tuan Khanh – Vice Chairman of Luong Nha Commune People's Committee, said: Dong The Chat is a dynamic, creative young man who dares to think and act. The beekeeping model of the Youth Union Secretary of Lac Song area is a destination for many farmers, union members, and young people in the commune to visit and learn from. The encouraging signs from the honey beekeeping model in the area have created more motivation for many households with limited capital to invest, opening up new prospects for economic development and contributing to poverty reduction in the locality.

Thanks to his tireless efforts, the Secretary of the Youth Union branch in Lac Song area has been commended by various levels of organizations. In 2023, Mr. Chat also received a Certificate of Merit from the Head of the Provincial Ethnic Affairs Committee for his outstanding achievements in emulation movements in ethnic minority and mountainous areas during the 2021-2023 period.
