On the afternoon of June 3rd, the People's Committee of Can Tho City held its regular monthly meeting for May 2026 to assess the socio -economic development situation over the past period and implement tasks for the remaining months of the year.

One of the highlights of the city's performance in the first five months of the year is the positive progress in budget revenue collection.

According to the Director of the City's Department of Finance, Le Thanh Tam, as of May 31st, the total state budget revenue in the city reached 13,833 billion VND, equivalent to 51.47% of the target set by the Central Government and the City People's Council. Of this, domestic revenue played a key role with 13,252 billion VND (reaching 50.55% of the target); revenue from import and export activities through customs reached 581.662 billion VND (reaching 88% of the target).

Commenting on this result, Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, Truong Canh Tuyen, remarked that this is an outstanding effort and the result of close coordination between the tax sector and other agencies, units, and localities.

With its current progress, Can Tho is fully capable of striving to achieve an annual budget revenue that is 15% higher than the target set in the resolution. This increase in revenue will create significant budgetary space, ensuring the financial resources necessary for the locality to successfully implement its political and socio-economic development tasks.

Besides the positive budgetary outlook, Can Tho's economic picture over the past five months has recorded many favorable growth indicators compared to the same period last year. In the first quarter alone, the economic growth rate (GRDP) reached 7.02%. Other key economic indicators also achieved impressive results: the industrial production index increased by over 8%; total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue increased by more than 17.5%; and notably, export turnover increased sharply by 30%. Cultural and social fields, education, health, and social security were implemented synchronously and effectively.

Addressing the issue of shirking responsibility in the implementation of national target programs. On the afternoon of June 3rd, at the Government press conference, Deputy Minister of Finance Nguyen Duc Chi answered questions related to Prime Minister's Directive No. 22/CT-TTg on the progress of implementation and disbursement of national target programs, as well as solutions to overcome the situation of shirking responsibility and slow implementation in 2026.

Alongside the overall achievements, the People's Committee of Can Tho City frankly acknowledges many difficulties and challenges. Economic growth, while maintaining a relatively high level, is still lower than the projected scenario and uneven across sectors. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are facing difficulties. Although the number of newly established businesses in the first six months of the year increased by nearly 15% (to over 2,000 businesses), the majority are small and micro-sized; meanwhile, the number of businesses dissolved or ceasing operations increased by 100% compared to the same period (from 500 businesses to 1,000 businesses).

Furthermore, the tourism industry has not developed to its full potential due to a lack of groundbreaking products. Land clearance, compensation, and resettlement support in some key projects remain a "bottleneck" affecting the progress of public investment disbursement.

According to the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, Truong Canh Tuyen, the tasks for the remaining months of 2026 are very challenging in order to meet the double-digit growth scenario. To achieve the set goals, the city will focus intensely on three main drivers: disbursing 100% of public investment capital (equivalent to VND 19,000 billion) combined with attracting private investment; promoting domestic consumption; and ensuring the export target reaches USD 5.5 billion.

Given the current situation where businesses rate the city's business environment score as low, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City has requested that departments and agencies proactively and decisively take action.

Accordingly, it is proposed that the Department of Finance take the lead in coordinating with the statistics sector and relevant units to review data, adjust the growth scenario for the last six months of the year and the public investment capital plan. At the same time, it should advise the City People's Committee to seek the opinion of the Standing Committee and the City Party Committee on resolving outstanding projects (initially the 21 projects that have been inspected and audited); consider options for handling surplus assets, and appraise the investment policies for large projects such as the GO! Co Do supermarket, the Vinh Trinh biomass thermal power plants, and wind power projects...

The head of the Can Tho city government also requested the Department of Finance to promptly advise on organizing a conference to evaluate the Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI), applying in-depth evaluation down to the departmental, sectoral, commune, and ward levels. At the same time, he requested the Department to advise the City People's Committee on piloting the investment approval process through the Investment Promotion Support Team (headed by the Chairman of the City People's Committee).
